Home Button Unresponsive After Water Damage?

My Iphone 6 had recently suffered water damage. The water damage came from an accidental drop into the pool. I did the rice trick and after about 5 days it worked. But, the home button doesn't work. However, it does respond after a few minutes. I have done my research and am recently trying an alcohol trick. I used a cotton ball with a dab of rubbing alcohol and pressed on my home button with a circular motion. I was told that the rubbing alcohol dries up the water, therefore contributing to my thoughts of clearing up any leftover water damage. After this, I have chosen to put it in rice for another day. Any ideas on what I could do, if this doesn't work, without going on the inside of the Iphone?

Putting it right sometime works not all the time dubbing alcohol doesn't work nobody has suggested anything useful that really works so there's only one solution I reckon and asked to see the guys at the Apple Store see if they can do a proper job on it and make it work ! Switching off the iTunes and Apple app doesn't work hard reset doesn't work new home button at the repair shop in town still doesn't work so unless somebody can try on the original home button from Apple Only the devil knows

Anthony, there is no rice trick. It is absolute rubbish and does not work. stop the rice. Rubbing alcohol does not contain enough alcohol content. It has mostly 70% which leaves 30% to be desired. You do want to obtain 90% (or higher) isopropyl alcohol. "accidental drop into the pool." will require you to open your phone. Dabbing it with a cotton ball will not clean it properly. Use these guides to disassemble your phone. Then clean every part with the alcohol and a soft brush. Of course you can also have an ultrasonic cleaner take care of that. Once it is properly cleaned, replace the battery and re-assemble. Then evaluate for any potential damage. Right now you will continue to have corrosion setting in. Every time you turn your phone on, sync it, or try to charge it, you are increasing the risk of shortcircuiting the logic board.

Alcohol did in fact work w/ the rice. It did the trick, but now the finger print scanner doesn't work. Any other ideas?

If the fingerprint scanner doesn't work, you may change the home button flex cable

My iphone 6 partially fell into the water from the bottom side.now after dryiing the iphone everythng is in wprkin condition except the fingerprint scanner.please provide a suitable solution.i am worried sick

I dropped my iPhone 5 into a puddle about three months ago. I let it air dry. The home button and finger scanner no longer worked.

Tonight, the home button works again. No idea why. "Touch" still doesn't work, but this is not a big deal.

WARNING - DO NOT USE ALCOHOL underneath the digitizer EM shield - it dissolves the black stuff on the back of the LCD/digitizer which sure seems to be important.

I dropped my phone in the lake and unbelievably we found it within a couple of minutes, and it worked for a few hours after. However later that night it stopped and wouldn't charge. The next morning the screen was completely red. However yes after putting it in a container of rice over night it worked again. So for those saying the rice trick doesn't work it surely got mine working again within 9 hours. The only thing that won't work is my home button. I've dropped another iPhone out of my jacket pocket into the toilet before(I know yuck) I was going to flush for my 3 year old and it fell out. I put it in rice and voila it worked perfectly fine for another year until it was time to upgrade, so rice has worked for me twice.

Heres the thing chrysmims, rice didn't do anything...the water dried out by itself.

When you let water sit in or on anything it's obviously going to dry out by itself. Rice can't even get inside the phone to absorb any water. Also it's not the water itself that is harmful the the device...its the impurities and minerals in the water such as tap water and pool water. Minerals such as salt are conductive and when left to sit cause corrosion as well as act as conductors to cause possible shorts.

People think rice works because occasionally water dries out by itself, corrosion forms on parts of the board that won't prevent it from working and the phone boots up. Rice is food, not a repair tool.

I totally agree with stephen

My phone fell into water and it was fine I put in rice just incase two days later the Touch ID stopped working what do I do

I dropped my phone in a pool and I used it for a few minutes to see if it was broken. When I was using it and it would say that I have headphone in even though I didn't and there was clearly water damage on the screen. So I put in rice for about a couple days with the screen brightness up all the way because I figured that it would get hotter and dry the water out. When I took my phone out of the rice all the water damage was gone and it worked completely fine

best thing is to open up the phone and clean out the water. if its doing random thing, most likely water is shorting something there.

My iPhone 6 was dropped into a puddle of Dr Pepper and i didn't know what to do so I turned it on and the home button is like I'm pressing it every second I use it help asap thx

Hi, strongly recommend turn it off and get it to a repair store who uses an ultrasonic cleaner immediately. Avoid turning it on and charging it. Giving power to it will increase the cost of damaging components and shorting the board. Also make sure the store uses a quality ultrasonic cleaner....not a jewelry cleaner.

Please avoid putting your phone in rice. It does absolutely nothing to help. Why people think it does is over a few days water dries out by itself and sometimes the phone comes back to life. The problem is when water sits on these connections it causes corrosion and rust. Corrosion damages these connections and if left untreated can cause irreversible damage to the device. Rice does not remove corrosion or rust. All you're doing by "using the rice trick" is letting water and corrosion sit on your motherboard for longer than it should. Best thing to do is immediately get it to a professional who can properly disassemble it and treat it. The quicker the better. Also if it's a later model iPhone you'll need to desolder the metal emi shields to check for any corrosion under those. Hope this helps.

A simple thing got me here: The home button isn't actually electrically connected until you have the case fully closed. Note the contacts on the motherboard side of the phone. So check that first... Whoops!
