There's a lot of variables too it, the biggest one is that consumer hardware degrades over time. Parts wear out, heat damage etc. Inspect your motherboard for blown caps, dust and the like. Sometimes a simple cleaning can improve things tremendously. If your caps are blown it's time for a new motherboard (or you can try replacing them, it's cheap if you can do it yourself) Grab an enterprise ssd (They tend to keep their performance til they die) and go from there.

Other ways to speed up your computer include:

1) Defragmenting (make sure you aren't defragging an SSD though).

2) If you have under ~20% of disk space, uninstall unneeded programs, delete unnecessary files, and empty the recycling bin. A hard drive near capacity takes longer for it to search through data.

3) Update outdated drivers. Newer drivers will likely be better performing (though often may be miniscule at most, or may cause its own problems).

4) For malware scanning, I'd recommend to download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. For general cleaning, CCleaner (proceed with caution and if you modify the registry, make sure to back it up).

Migrate to Linux. All unices SO don't need defrag. Linux is free and extremely powerful. Only few malwares can affect it and 32bits-worms have no room.

You have unknowingly asked the question about the mysteries of life.

In previous generations the answer was ,

"it's faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, and more money".

Add now

faster cars, women are a constant as is great whiskey and more powerful computers and more credit.

When you first get a new computer you usually notice the speed increase over the previous one. As time goes by and you get used to it or you use a faster one your perceived speed seems to slow. Driving at 120 mph in a car seems fast till you've driven at 160 mph. As YOU get older, time moves dramatically faster.

There's three types of answers a right one a wrong one and an entertaining one . the first two come from anyone but the last comes only from children and high mileage citizens of life. How high is your mileage mayer?

There is so many reason to slow down PCs

1) Virus infection or some kid of activity of malware or virus

2) Operating system relate issue : such as PC running with lots of temporary files and large registry

3) Hardware malfunction or source hard drive full with data : could be SSD related fault or RAMs / VRAM, motherboard data bus related ets..

You can speed up the PC using below steps

1) Clean the viruses malware if available with your PC and remember to keep only one antivirus for the system and make sure it running with latest update.

2) Clean the temporary files using disc cleanup wizard and remove unwanted programs if available or you can install fresh os

3) run the disk check function and check whether bad sectors or hard drive issue observed in the system. clean the hardware and slots and try you could get the speed back

Cheers!

While the Aaron's response tells the solution; the answer to the question is manifold. Buddika's answer was quite good.

Here are some other things to think about:

  • Computer hardware is static.
    • Computer hardware doesn't self-upgrade and so will always perform at a maximum of the level of it's current hardware. You can replace parts, bigger HDD, better Proc, etc. But unless you actually physically change the makeup of the computer, you're still talking about a limited budget for horsepower.
  • Operating Systems are dynamic.
    • Windows especially has software creep. As bugs and exploits are found, the OS is gradually updated over time. This causes "Software Bloat" which can really tax your system. Remember you're still running with a limited budget. So the more the OS takes up, the less is available for other things.
  • Programmers program for the future.
    • Applications (especially games) are designed for the current generation of PC's. With PC's always getting upgraded and faster the bar keeps getting raised.
  • Programmers are lazy
    • While not really true, Programmers tend to purchase common libraries for programming instead of designing everything from scratch. These libraries get more complicated, and larger in order to cover the most customer base. In doing that they over program the libraries and when they get included in the application there is quite a bit of functionality completely unused in the actual application. Like an appendix.

This is a problem with the NTFS file system that windows uses here are your options to fix it.

  • Install GNU/Linux

or

  • Make sure you have more than 20 % disk space left
  • Defragment
  • Remove any unwanted programs and malware.

You can remove malware using malware bytes and remove viruses using clamwin.

A good article to address this :http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-23868...

In short, The biggest problem I experience is over time when you install/uninstall software there are many "orphaned" files that are left over. I like to use IObit Uninstaller that will search for and remove these fragments that are left over. Like someone posted earlier, programs when they get installed, write information to a database called your "registry". These entries build over time and it takes longer for your computer to scan over all of the entries when it boots.

Second, another bang-for-your-buck item is explained in the article I linked to and that is "startup programs". There are many popular programs that install a startup application on your system meaning everytime your computer run, these programs run in the "background" using up your system memory resources. Among them are iTunes, Adobe products, and many others. Removing many of these programs from your startup will increase your speed and other than anti-virus or backup programs, many of them are not needed and only provide "update capability", however, when you run the program it will check for updates anyway in most cases.

newer programs often need more RAM, try installing new sets of RAM though.

another is Thermal throttling, in this condition the CPU is under too much heat,

try cleaning your case and put case fans In your computer
