LCD Screen and Backlight

I was about to replace my LCD screen which has gone black. I see some listed as "without backlight" while some make no mention? How do I tell if the screen is dead or is it just the backlight? Is the backlight a separate component in the camera?

Your wonderful screen replacement guide makes no mention of the possibility or method of replacing the backlight.

I think my original damage was probably caused by moisture penetration.

Clive Williams, yes this camera uses a separate backlight unit. Part number for that is CM1-3168-000 (#1 on the diagram) and the complete assembly is CM1-3169-001 (#9 on the diagram). the LCD itself is CK9-1179-000 (#8). So it all depends where you get it from. Always verify with the vendor to make sure that you have what you need.

that is correct, so it'll be a bit of a guessing game. sometimes, a dark (very dark room) and a small light source angled against the LCD screen will work. If your backlight has failed, but your LCD is still working, you may still see the outline of your cameras menu and the LCD screen. It is a bit tricky with a screen that size. You do not need a lot of candle power to check it. If you buy the complete assembly, than you are in the clear.

Just like any other LCD screen (small iPods as well as large TV's) if your backlight is out you can still see what is on the screen by shining an external lightsource at an angle against the screen. this works best in a darkened room. In the case of a small LCD screen like the one from a camera , the light source will not have to be very bright. A small flashlight etc. is usually sufficient. Set the camera to something like the menu settings screen to have it display something for the test.
