How to remove top cover on 22" Recycler?
Need to replace rope start. 3 nuts holding rope start are not releasing and bolts are turning with nuts. Model PH-XT675-2011

Jim, not quite sure where you are stuck. Attached image shows the individual parts for the top cover. Also, take a look at this decent video on here The service manual describes it as "Remove Engine Cover Insert (if equipped) and Cover
NOTE: Whenever possible, an impact wrench should be used to loosen nuts securing retractable starter.
1. Remove Torx screws securing engine cover insert.
2. Remove nuts securing engine cover. Remove engine cover.

It is possible that all three studs have come loose when you tried to remove the three nuts. In that case it'll be a bit tough and you would have to try to take the engine cover off with it. Continue to turn the studs to see if they unscrew from the engine and apply some upward pressure on the cover.

If you take out all screws on the engine cover and you still can't get it off because it feels like there's still something holding it in the front, peel the sticker on it from the bottom and you should find a square slot. It's a clip. Stick a screwdriver in the slot and push the clip towards the back side of the mower.

Yes, that worked. The cover came off once the clip was displaced with the screw driver. Thanks for the info. No comment about who designed the application of the decal.

This is the worst engineering & customer service I have experienced in a long time. The instructions for removing the decal (one should never have to remove a decal!) to use the screwdriver are nowhere to be found in the manuals! Shame on them! I didn't think I was going to find the model of the B&S either, but finally did. No excuse.
Once I knew about that clip, I felt around and found the slot where I applied a screwdriver to pry without pealing off the seal. Just poke a slot in it. (As if that seal was an important piece of art)

Yes unfortunately do you have to poke a hole or at least cut a portion out of the decal but if you run your finger there you’ll find the outline and use a razor knife as I did and you’ll see what’s underneath. A slotted screwdriver pushes the tab back which makes it easy to lift the cover off…

Indeed, that is a horrible design to cover the clip and hide it with a decal, nor to mention it anywhere in the user's manual. Thank heavens for handy folks like yourselves that post solutions here. Much obliged!

What is the Briggs and Stratton engine model number used in the mower?
Looks like Toro only adds decals to the B&S engine so you may have to check for the B&S engine parts

Hi, I need to know how to remove the three small nuts holding the engine cover on. They are very tight and I don't want to damage the corners by sheering them off. Any help would be very welcome. Cheers Jim

The Toro Model 20339 lawn mower has a red cover with two (2) bolt/screws t the rear (handle) of the cover. After removing the two (2) screws the cover is lifting at the rear but locked in the front and will not release. What is the trick?? Poor design. I cannot get it off without breaking the plastic cover.

I can't figure out what size the two screws on top of the red cover are. I have tried sockets 5m to 8m and neither one fits over the screw. I have used my screwdriver to un lock the front clip behind the decal, but stuck on how to get the two screws out. Model 20332 personal pace Toro mower.
