mikecornerstone, could be a bad digitizer. Of course, you do want to try a soft reset first Soft Reset:
Hold the power switch for twenty seconds. You will need to slide the power switch along and hold it for twenty seconds before releasing it. ...
Your reboot screen should appear when you release the power switch.
Wait a minute or two to give your device time to reboot
Turn the Kindle back on.
After that you most likely will have to replace the digitizer. Here is the guide for it

Mine similar issue just touchscreen buttons on bottom that make it so I can switch apps

Same issue. Amazon hopefully will send a replacement. Switch to Samsung.
