Upgrade to SSD: remove HDD 3,5 or optical drive? (iMac mid 2007)

I'm reading several guides on internet about upgrading an Imac with SSD drive.

I found out that my Imac mid 2007 has a PATA interface in the optical drive.

Even if it exists an adapter from PATA to SATA, someone states that is unuseful to put there the SSD drive, cause possible lose of performance.

But what I couldn't figured out is: how much ssd speed/performance I lose if I put the SSD drive onto the optical PATA drive, respect the HDD SATA ones? 10%? 40%?

Thanks in advance!

So as you can see the data rate difference between the optical drives PATA port (100 Mb/s) is quite slow when you realize your systems SATA port is SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). Which is why I don't recommend using the optical drive if you want any speed with either a SSD or HD.

I do recommend using the internal SATA port for either a SSHD or a SSD drive. Then use the external FireWire port this system has for your second drive. While FireWire (800 Mb/s) is still not as fast as SATA II it is much faster than PATA. I won't use the external connection for the boot drive for data to day stuff.

I will follow this guide so,

only for the ssd part ;)

Thanks a lot!

You do want to transfer the HD thermal sensor as outlined in the IFIXIT guide I have linked here on Step 20 onto your SSD which is replacing the HD.

Heres the dope:

  • PATA 100 Mb/s
  • SATA I (1.5 Gb/s)
  • SATA II (3.0 Gb/s)
  • SATA III (6.0 Gb/s)
  • PCIe 3.1 - 2 lanes (10Gbps x2) *
  • PCIe 3.1 - 4 lanes (10Gbps x4) *

These measures are all in bits not Bytes

Note: PCI is often measured in Transitions Vs Bit orByte as each lane can have an independent data flow going in different directions. So a PCIe 3.1 would have 8.0GT/s (Giga Byte Transitions)
