Why is my screen black?

When I power it on I can hear that it loaded to the desktop with no problem but I can't see anything. If I plug it into an external monitor it works, but for what I use the computer for that's not really an option.

Take a closer look at the screen when the laptop is on.

If the image is still there but it's very dim, it's either bad inveter or failed LCD screen.

Try playing with the little plastic thing that fits in the frame when you close the screen.

This allows the screen to turn off (or standby) when you close the laptop.

Sometimes it is down and it acts as if the screen was closed ...

When did this start happening? Have you dropped it recently or installed any new drivers?

Can you see the boot window or the windows loading screen.

If it stays black throughout the whole process after pressing the on button until you hear the windows welcome sound then;

Could be a majority of reasons really, the ribbon cable for the monitor located by the hinges inside the casing has become worn and contacts are broken.

The monitor cable has become unlatched from the motherboard.

The screen is fried.

If you feel comfortable about it; Following the first few steps on this guide (direct from DELL) will enable you to open the casing and by reading the guide, check that the cables it tells you to unplug are in fact plugged in correctly:

Just wanted to share my similar experience with a Dell Inspiron 6000. Very dim display (hardly seen or seen with a flashlight), sometimes would show the Dell logo at startup and then go blank. I first changed the inverter, nothing, then replaced the entire LCD assembly (Panel, inverter, and cable) from another Inspiron laptop, still nothing. Was thinking about a bad mainboard, then read about the lid-close switch and it was indeed the problem. Apparently, it was stopping the current to go to the backlight. There are a pair of white and black wires going from your mainboard (below the keyboard) to the lid lock mechanism. Not quite sure what I did, but I think I detached the one labeled main on the mainboard and while touching the other one (AUX) with this one, turned the laptop on. It worked! Then connected the wire back in its place and the problem is permanently solved (using the original LCD/inverter!)

Here's what worked for me: shutting down, removing the battery, and holding the power button down for 30 seconds, then plugging the AC adapter back in and starting up without the battery. Like a charm.

On my wife's Dell 1525, while using Chrome the screen would just black while viewing Youtube videos or videos from Facebook. Now, the screen was the only thing lost, what was going on and sound and all were working, only the screen was black. I found on a Ubuntu site the answer. Go into the setting and then into the advanced settings, scroll down to the ( system ) and uncheck the ( use hardware acceleration when available ). This cured the screen going black while viewing videos, I don't know why, but this was an answer to our problem, maybe it will help you.

The lid switch is magnetic on my inspiron 6000 and I can use a small magnet in my cell phone case to operate this switch (located just above where the left lid latch hooks) to put my unit into standby. Since this works every time I don't think the lid switch is the fault. My problem with black screen is intermittent, but using an external monitor always seems to work. I have replaced the inverter/backlight board and no change. Help.

sometimes you just have it on "projector only mode". Then it would only show up on an external screen and your laptop screen will be black. Try to hit the button that transfers the image between the laptop and external screen/projector a few times.

Hi,

In this case it would be best to perform a system restore.

There are two ways to perform system restore:

Open start menu click run and then type cmd to open command prompt.

Type CD.. to make c:\ only.

Type CD windows then CD System32 and then restore.

After once you find yourself in c:\ windows\system32\restore>

Then type restrui.exe press enter.

Once the system restore window open then click next to select any available restore point.

This process shall take couple of minutes to perform restore and please make sure that once this process started it wont be

reversible and neither you will lose any personal data.

Other way to perform system restore is to open safe mode by clicking F8 on start-up and check safe mode option then further a

dialogue box will open to ask for system restore and then follow the above steps. Thanks

On my brother's Dell 1525, it helped, when I set monitor brightness 2...3 steps lower than maximum level. I had to use external monitor to have visual access to the user interface for adjustment. I had to adjust both BIOS setting and Windows setting.

I have an Inspiron 1720 that had a blackened screen. I removed the battery pack and power chord for a few moments; reinstalled the battery and power chord and cold booted. It restored the screen.

use the shift-key to open the bootloader, so you can startup your windows / linux.

maybe it works. perhaps you can try to connect an extern monitor. when the monitor works well, the problem is in the build-in monitor. maybe it's stuck or not connected.

I have a Dell 1764 that took forever to figure out. The computer ran but it was hard to get the monitor to come on. Pushing the on/off button numerous times and the screen would work but this was time consuming . And could take up to 15 minutes.

Finally found the solution.......the cable that runs from the mother board to the monitorwas damaged from opening and closing the laptop. 4 years later still going strong.

My dell inspiron laptop was turning on but the screen was black. I could see the mouse but not the actual screen. I really don't know what to do. I've looked on youtube, searched the web and found nothing that made sense. Also my dell laptop is new, I just got it 4 days ago and it's already acting up. I also haven't dropped it at all, nor gone on any bad sites so I really don't know what is going on. If anyone had/has the same problem and you have some solutions I would be really happy if you shared them.

Thankyou,

Awa Aw
