Why is the screen not working

i powered my phone off and then about 1 hour later i tried to turn it back on by holding down the volume and power button at the same time but it didn't work. i tried just pressing the power button but it just vibrates and nothing on the screen appears. i charged it fully as well. there was also a flashing green light (when a message appears) but still the screen is black.
