The barrel shield that you pull back to insert the firing rings is not stable. It slides back and forth on the gun and does not hold its position. How can I fix this so the piece holds its position and returns to covering the barrel once I insert the ring?

The return spring has most likely been disconnected from its original mounting spot. This prevents the shield from returning to its original position.
To fix this issue, you must open up the gun and find the faulty spring. Reattach the spring to its original position and the shield should start working properly.
