Randomly Powering Off - Not sure of cause

I've been using this particular 3TB Time Capsule to host my wireless network as well as a good deal of content for access from different computers (date of purchase Early 2013 - Apple Store). Recently, it seems to randomly power off without warning. It doesn't happen more than once a week, and afterward a simple power cycle gets everything up and running again.

I was doing some research and it seems like older models have had problems with the power supply - but nothing seems to current. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you noted the problem was during or just after a large data move I suspect the unit is overheating.

I would try cleaning out the dust build up using some can'ed air and a soft paint brush. Also see if the unit is getting enough ventilation as well.

Unfortunately, even the latest versions of the Apple base stations can still have overheating / power supply issues, that may not show up immediately.

One option, if you have AppleCare in effect on a qualified product, the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule will be covered for up to 3 years from its purchase date.

Ok, a few things here:

  • The TC works "best" with "green" drives. Your Seagate Exos X16 is an enterprise-class hard drive, designed for high-performance and reliability in data center environments. The TC may not provide sufficient power to this drive, and maybe why it is acting as it is.
  • AFAIK, the TC's firmware can only support up to 3TB drives. However, I am aware that folks have been successful with using much larger drives. Regardless, when placed inside the TC, the TC's firmware will format it into three separate partitions to support its dedicated use for Time Machine.
  • Interestingly, some drives are particular on how they are orientated. As you are aware, the drive inside the TC will be in a fixed downward position. Whether or not this Seagate would have an issue with this, I don't know for sure.
  • Finally, double-check to see if this drive uses SMR. This is typical of Seagate drives > 4TBs. These are known to be problematic with the TCs.

... oh, and yes, although this topic seems similar to that of the OP, it's really not, and you should start a new post to make sure it gets the attention it deserves.

Hi !

I wanted to post a now topic but this one seem to be close to the issue I encounter. To keep it short, I got a 5th Gen AP Time Capsule for several years now. Until recently the TC was working like a charm.

I bought a 12TB HDD (Seagate Exos X16) to replace the 2TB that was on the TC. I have tested the disk before mounting it on Windows (CrystalDiskInfo) and also on MacOS (DriveDX/Disk Utility/Disk Drill Disk Tool). All seems to be clear. I have done it several time because of the noise that was weird to me (but it has been a while since I din't heard a HDD scratching).

Well, the mounting was done smoothly and the configuration also. Btw I configured it as follow :
- Static Internet connexion with assign IP
- Wireless OFF, I don't need it
- Network mode is bridge
- Extra details : TC is plugged with c5e ethernet cable and I am using Catalin (10.15.7)

Now, the issue... Its driving me crazy because I can't manage to isolate the cause. Everything seems to work "just fine" (LED is full green) but when I am launching the first save (~550Go), the TC is rebooting randomly. It could happen around 100Go or at the beginning. So since few days, I wasn't able to complete the first save.
The weirdest thing, and this is where I am totally lost, is than every time the TC is rebooting, is making my router reboot aswell... So I am loosing WAN in top of that. How is that possible ? Like if it was the opposite of magic packet...

Here is what I have tried so far :
- Factory reset several time the TC . Turning the Wifi On, DHCP Internet. Erasing the disk. Doing it only with a ethernet cable between my MBPro and the TC. Résultat = NOK. Same issue.

Here is what I am going to try :
- Putting back the original disk to see if the issue is still happening. If yes, I am going to send back the drive.

If anyone has already encounter this issue and know any details about that, it will be appreciated. Thank you very much for your help.
