xbox one controller frying batteries

I bought a used xbox one controller from gamestop about a year ago. When i first bought it i noticed that any batteries i put into it would become very hot and even if they were brand new the controller would say they were low. I was able to use it with a usb cable connecting to my computer but it has become very annoying. Is there anyway i can fix this on my own? I dont have any warenty or anything so returning it is not an option.
