Almost 5-7" of the laptop screen gets covered with thin vertical lines on starting the computer.Lines do not appear when adapter is used to connect laptop to another monitor. Is this a 'display' or a LCD problem? Please advise what can be done?

This is LCD screen failure. You'll have to replace the screen.

Those are raster lines and if the lines are there all the time or intermittent but in the same location it is an indication of a bad panel. The panel driver can also be the cause of this symptom. Some panels have issues with the connector that carries the signals. So check your wiring, connections etc. Your video card itself seems to check out since you have no issues with an external monitor. If none of this resolves your issue, follow LaptopRepairGuy's advise and replace the panel. Good Luck

I had thin red vertical lines on my screen of my T430 Thinkpad. I solved this by disconnecting and blowing air on the connector and reconnecting the screen cable just next to the right hinge
