Volume Wheel: Inconsistency in Volume Control

Can't consistently get the right amount a volume due to a problem with the volume wheel on the a50. Quarter of a revolution upward, and the volume goes to the max. 5-10 revolutions downward to get the volume lowered. What to do to get it working properly again? it's annoying.

Hello! This post is still relevant, so I'll post my solution here. :)

I had the same problem and the wheel did not feel or hear different physically.

It seems like the person above me just looked at his headset after disassembling it which was his/her mistake.

I did the following; Removed foam, removed 4 screws, removed the next 4 screws.

Everything looked exactly like it should, even the wheel. HOWEVER, I still removed the wheel and placed it back again. I scrolled the wheel and it scrolled like before, so I put on the first case part, with 2 screws, started the headset and the wheel worked like it should again.

To save yourself pain, when you put everything together again, put the screw where the wheel is first and don't screw too tight, you might want to adjust the wheel again then. Once you have that right, screw the next 3, put on the foam of the last case protection before screwing it back on!

Good luck!

this worked for me!

Didn't work for me. After I tried this, I ordered this part: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/alp...

De-soldered the old part, soldered on the new one, and that fixed the "volume jumps to random levels" when you turn the volume knob problem.

i just grabbed the volume wheel and tried to move it a bit and it worked for me without having to open a single screw.

I am currently having this issue, I have the green ones. Gen 2 or 3 (?$ for Xbox? I took the cushion off and there are 3 magnets, not screws. Not sure if anyone has a video?

I was also looking to try my hand at repairing the volume control on my Gen 1 A50s, and I think this is the component: https://www.alps.com/prod/info/E/HTML/En...

@slavanossar - dude, thank you so much!!! I have an old pair of A50s that I got back in 2013 or 2014 (has the 2.5mm cord to work with the xbox 360). After a year I think it was, the volume control wheel wasn't working. You could turn it any direction and the volume just jumps around to some random level. Sometimes up, sometimes down, sometimes full blast, who knows. I stopped using them and packed them back in their box. Finally opened them back up since I got an xbox one and am starting to get back into console gaming. Found your part recommendation and decided to give it a shot. Worst case scenario is I'm out $3 for the part and my A50s are still broke and get trashed (haven't used them in 4+ years anyways). I ordered that part (~$10 total with shipping), de-soldered the old part, soldered on the new one, and it fixed my old A50s volume control problem!!!

I also went ahead and ordered this part after being tired of constantly fidgeting with the knob. I took it apart and put it back together in the meantime... working for now until replacement part comes in. Fingers crossed that swap goes well as well.

I have searched everywhere for an answer to the volume wheel problem, seems like the people that had the problem also had warranty so it was resolved that way. I took mine apart because I read somewhere that someone fixed there and they said the wheel was out of place so they popped it back in and it was fixed. After taking mine apart I could not see what the problem was, it all looked normal. So I went ahead and ordered a new headset, the Siberia 800, which has some good reviews and I can use it with my ps4 and xbox one.

One comment from Astro, was to let the headset die completely, let the battery drain, then it will be fixed once its is fully charged again, I tried this and it did not work.

I might try to fully drain it then flash the firmware to the headset, I will comment back once I do.

Or maybe some one fixed theirs?

I took mine apart, wrapped a piece of scotch tape around the plastic tip that goes into the actual wheel (internally and perpendicular to the rubber wheel) and re-assembled it with the tape in it and now the roller works great!

I had to remove the magnetic covering, unpeel the felt with a razor, then remove 4 screws. I cannot believe the issue is the plastic wore out inside that turns this, but resolved :D

I have same problem with my A50 gen3 Xbox version.

I read someone here just wiggled the scrolling wheel and it worked.

So, I grab the scrolling wheel and wiggled it a lot, with light force, and it was fixed!

Let's hope it last, cause Gen4 doesn't look promising to me, maybe Gen5

Edit:

Issue came back and wiggiling didn't seem to work again :(
