Thick black vertical stripe on iMac screen after HDD to SSD swap

Hi all, I read this discussion

Thick black stripe on iMac screen after attempting HDD to SSD swap

and I apparently have a very similar problem.

Block Image

The thing that's different in my case is that:

– The display is in perfect conditions: I've been very cautious in cutting the adhesive strip.

– I discharged static electricity following the iFixit guide and I used antistatic gloves to protect the board.

– I accidentally pulled, or stretched, the flex data cable. The connector on the logic board is ok, but the cable could be damaged.

When I move a window I can see something in the black stripe, and the screenshots are OK.

and every external screen or Cintiq tablet works perfectly.

So, I'd like to replace the cable with a new one, but I can't find it, I always find only the flex cable for A1311, but I don't think that it's the right one.

Somebody knows where to find the right cable, or if the A1311's one could be OK?

Alternatively, is it possible to repair the flex cable, maybe soldering again the contacts?

Thanks!

Marco

The fact your external display or screenshot doesn't show the stripe only tells you the graphics board image in its memory is good before its sent to the display. So you have proven the display and its connections to the logic board has the problem nothing within the logic board its self which is good!

Sorry guy the display got the worse of it here ;-{ While you may have pulled the cable a bit it (and even damaged it as well) it would have given you a very different symptom.

Unlike LVDS signaling iDP is more like your digital TV's signaling. If you ever watch over the air (vs cable) you might have noticed the signal will freeze up or go into a checker board. iDP signaling is very similar to this it wouldn't give you the steady bar.

Sadly it doesn't take much to damage the display when you cut it free. Time for a new display assembly.

Ok guys, I was prepared to this news. I'm waiting for a new cable, just in case, then I'll buy a new display. I've found a genuine LG display, but I've also seen the AjParts ones. Do you know if they're good? The main issue for me, as an illustrator, is the colors fidelity. I'm oriented in buying an original one, but if you know the functionality of Ajparts ones, please tell me.

Thanks!

vansdca - I'm sure Marco had to replace the display. The damage you see in his first picture was caused when he opened the system. This happens when cutting the adhesive tapes as a metal knife can damage the tiny wires on the back side of the display as well as the force of lifting the display. I've seen this issue to often.

There is a very special tool which you need: iMac Opening Wheel and here is the guide you must follow for either 21.5 or 27" iMac and lastly you'll need a set of Adhesive Strips for your exact system.

@vansdca you're right. I replaced it with a LG-manufactured screen (LM215WF3) and everything worked perfectly, also the gamma and the luminosity are identical to the original one.

But I have to disagree on one thing: I used the iMac Opening Wheel (I bought it on iFixit), but you have to be absolutely careful even with that tool, I made the disaster with it.

tarafından

@marcomagnano - Happy to hear you got your system working again. Yes, even with the correct tools the technique needed to lift the screen is a bit tricky even with the proper tools.

If you're all set how about scoring the answer and accept it as solved.

Thanks for the update guys!! Really appreciated!

Same issue. Where do I go to determine which kind of display assembly I need? I messed it up, so I’m taking the imac and display into a pro to install the new part, but I don’t want to order through them. I’m on a late-2013 27” imac

The cost to replace the display is far more than the computer is worth. OWC includes suction cups with their hard drive replacement kit which make the actual lifting of the display MUCH easier. My display was fine before I removed it, now the black lines it’s shot.
