Why is it when I push the power button to lock my phone it shuts down

Just got the phone dec,16th never been dropped or anything. Well just a few days ago it started acting weird i push the power button to lock my phone and when i try to push it again to type in my code its just a black screen so i have to pop out the battery and turn it on that way please help thank you
