Black MacBook works but has strange behavior

I have a 2.4 Ghz black Macbook (4,1) and it generally works fine.

I lent it to a friend for a few months and it came back working fine - at least so I thought at first.

HOWEVER..... it now strange things happen.

The Mac acts like a key is stuck down

For example, programs will beep as though I'm entering a completely wrong key.

When choosing an option on a menu, the Mac will alternate between the various choices on it's own.

TextEdit will give a drop down menu of alternate words while I write. This is a menu with a scroll bar. It is NOT the same menu that you get when control clicking on a word in TextEdit.

Tech Tool 5 shows no problems.

I'm suspicious that the a key (or keys) are stuck down, but am am wondering if there is some other problem.

Can I operate this computer without the top case at all to test my theory?

I also a have a 2.0 ghz white macbook that I could swap onto this computer.

Will that work?

Use the following link and lemerise's procedure to boot with the top case removed. Be careful and good luck.

How does the keyboard communicate with the logic bd?

I found the symbol on the logic board. It is right between the fan and the orange CD cable. It worked to start the computer!

I think its the option key that is being pressed down. Have you tried pressing them to "unstick" them? You can test it by taking off the top case and plugging in a USB keyboard (and mouse).

While you have the top case off I would look carefully for signs of a liquid spill. +

If it were the Option key stuck down, wouldn't it be true that I would get completely different characters when typing into a word processor?

I do not get anything other than what I expect.

Also, I I remove the top case, and plug in an external keyboard and mouse, how do I start the computer?

The track pad on a Black MacBook stopped working, apparently stuck down in a permanent "select" position.

Another iFix thread suggested that it might be a swollen battery that may need to be replaced.

I removed the battery and the track pad worked fine with the battery out.

Gingerly replaced the battery and gently tightened the locking screw and, voila, working fine, at least for now.
