I have dashboard but nothing is responding

I've got the dashboard but nothing is responding. It's taken ages to get this far. It was stuck on a black screen with just logo and progress circle before. Any ideas please. I'm a technology numty which doesn't help.

By dashboard are you referring to the bios screen or the sign in page or homepage ? Is the laptop making any clicking noises? What version of windows are you running . are you able to boot into safe mode and or do you now how ? do you have an anti virus program running on the machine? if so which one . If you can answer these questions we can give a better response to your problem.

I think I'm referring to the home screen. The one with a few icons on it. No clicking noises. Windows 10. Don't know how to boot into safe mode but don't think I can. I think I have an anti virus programme called MacAfee. Thanks for responding. Theresa.

Can you get into Windows or at least to the log-on screen? You can get to advanced startup options by holding Shift while you click Restart. From there, you can select the option to boot into Safe Mode and try and figure out what's going on. Hope this helps!

theresaross @tiscali. co.uk Lets start by clearing the memory so we can have a clean boot. This is done by Shutting off the netbook a and unplugging the power adapter and pulling the battery out . once there is no power to the machine hold down the power button for 60 seconds . This removes all residual power from the memory wiping it clean so it will have a fresh boot . Now reinstall the battery and the power adapter . Now reboot the computer , listen for beeps as the laptop starts and make a note of how many and if they were short or long beeps. also listen for the fan to start and for the hard drive to spin up . If there is a cd or dvd drive remove any discs that may be in the drive as they can have an effect on the boot. Once you laptop boots test to see if its running normally . If you have no joy they we need to boot into safe mode This link will help with that. Once in safe mode we need to do a virus scan so run your anti virus program . If you anti virus program is out of date and its MacAfee then its probably the problem and we need to remove it Using the programs uninstaller will not remove the malware that MacAfee will leave behind, however to completely remove it we need to use a program like

http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_unin...

use the 30 day free trial .

Next install a program like https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-downloa...

use there free trial and do an update of the program first then run a scan and remove unwanted malware from your system . Please be careful not to use unfriendly spyware removal programs as most will just make things worse. Malwarebytes is a safe program . Once you've completed the scan you can a do a SFC scan from the command prompt . remember to run as an admin

this link will show you how
