Windows 10 says password is incorrect when it wakes up from Sleep

This morning, I turned on my laptop and entered my password to sign in to Windows 10. Everything was normal as usual. In the noon, I put the laptop to sleep and then I left. After an hour, I resumed it, but Windows 10 said my password is incorrect. I checked my password several times and I’m quite certain it is correct, but the Windows 10 keeps saying the password is incorrect. I tried to restart Windows 10, but it still did not work. Why is this? How can I sign back to my Windows 10 now?

It is the same problem with me too. On waking up win 10 does not recognise the correct password. I found that the lower case letters typed automatically get converted into upper case letters and numerics and special characters are not being typed at all. This started after my latest Windows update.

Solution - if it can be called that - was to log in once as the Administrator and then log in again as yourself. This time the passwaord you put in is typed correctly.

I am staring at a fkn screen saying “undoing changes”, on my machine with windows 10, that has slowed down so much it takes 30sec to 1 min to open a browser.

I bought this pos because my last laptop did the same. I use it for multitrack recording.

Useless.

I am locked out of my machine after it stopped at 97%, had to reboot, then it is telling me my password is incorrect...it’s not.....

I am sick of paying through the nose for machines that last 6 months before they slow to uselessness

It's possible that you've enabled NumLock or your keyboard input layout was changed. Try to type your password using the on-screen keyboard.

You know hirenboot CD and Windows media creation tool?they can boot the computer or helps you make a Windows bootable disk.With one of them you can break password for the locked computer.

I suffer this problem occasionally and could not work out why. I have started to track this down recently to when Windows 10 or Microsoft is doing a silent install (which it does too frequently when not active).

When the computer wakes up from power save it wants a Password or PIN but the correct one is not accepted. If you use START:POWER you see that the computer asks for "update and shutdown" or "update and restart". I pick "update and shutdown" and then boot the computer; it now accepts the normal password or PIN to logon as usual.

There is something strange when these silent installs happen in Windows 10 and the computer needs restarting because nothing tells you this after waking up from power save and your computer Password or PIN will not be accepted. This is a really annoying feature in Windows 10

Yes. It is annoying. If you see a grey screen for 5 seconds saying please wait while starting your computer, the password is not recognised. Shut down and start up again. Windows is now terrible. To think you can just switch on your computer and do some work lol not with Windows. My next computer will NOT have windows.

I am almost too committed to Windows having cussed at Windows 95, 98, Millenium, 2000, XP and now 10. I deployed 10 over XP 2 PCs configured almost identically. One went well whereas the other was a 2 week process culminating in a $200 purchase that, so far, has required multiple sessions with tech support over 5 months, restoration of the data partition of the hard drive from a backup, restoration of the OS partition as a manual re-install all my software [keep those serial numbers, discs, place of purchase, date of purchase, passwords, etc and never, EVER ASSUME THAT THE MICROSOFT ONE DRIVE WILL BE THERE WHEN YOU NEED IT THE MOST]. Same setup, software environment, manufacturer and Windows 10 is a completely different animal between the 2. Geeks will want you to change your password from time to time for a variety of reasons but they don't know how to say that so they tell you that YOU forgot YOUR password even if you have it correctly written/typed in 10 places [never in Hindi; 10 knows better!].

My Windows 10 encountered similar "troubles" many times. I personally think that Ophcrack is an authoritative Windows password remover that can remove passwords on any Windows OS.

This can be because of a keyboard error. Use the onscreen keyboard which can be activated from the ease of access icon on the login screen. Click on Ease of Access > On Screen Keyboard and enter the correct password using the onscreen keyboard

I you are using a USB keyboard, just disconnect it clean the contact area with tissue paper and reconnect the USB cable. Also do not push the USB end completely into the slot. USB connectors work the best when they just about fully inserted.

J, thanks but this is not an error for me. I have a staff having this issue and I remove in so when you remote in you are not accessing their keyboard but your own and I can log in as admin but not with my account or anyone else.

I got new solution.it must works for everyone.

1.hold shift and click on restart.it will pop up a green screen with 4 option.

2.click troubleshoot.

3.click advanced options

4.click startup repair.

5.it will want to you to type your password(type the password which one was working before)

6.then complete next tasks and you're back to previous.

That didnt work for me... I know my password is correct, because i wrote it on a memo on my phone... And it keeps saying that its the wrong password... So im wiping my laptop and starting over

After it made the repair I still had one "Incorrect Password" but upon my second attempt it worked as advertised.

I tried your procedure but it keeps saying my password is incorrect. I know it’s correct because I used another device to sign into my account online, and I was in. But each time I try it on the device that has the PIN issue, it keeps saying “The password is incorrect. Try again.” No matter how many times try. What I’m saying is my password works for me signing into my account but not on the device doing the troubleshooting procedure you recommended. Any other suggestions?

I had the same problem this morning, couldn't get past the request for password even though my computer is set for no password required and the p/w I did put in I know is the correct one.

My answer in desperation was to do a long push on the power button on my computer and shut it down, wait a minute then a short push on the computer power button to clean start it. Everything came up as normal. In that case, problem solved.

D_ShadoW I tried it the way you said it should be done but it keeps saying he password is incorrect. I know my password is correct because I used another device to sign into my account and it worked. But it’s not working out that way with the troubleshooting procedure.....strange.....and frustrating.....any other suggestions.....?

Sometimes a computer caches (saves) a previous profile, and you have to log in with the username and password that was used at that time. No other credentials will work.

Try your Microsoft account pass!

In my case the system was asking for a password after i set to safeboot mode in cmd and i was trying login with my PIN as usually.

In my case, the keyboard wasn't producing the A and W characters when pressed, even after rebooting the desktop.

Disconnecting the keyboard from USB and reconnecting when the machine is powered on has helped.

Here’s how I solved this problem:

  • Hold down SHIFT -> POWER icon -> Restart ->Restart anyway -> continue to hold SHIFT
  • Troubleshoot -> Advanced options -> Uninstall Updates
  • Uninstall latest quality update
  • Uninstall latest feature update
  • Restart computer
  • Now computer accepts correct password

I did this but, I just uninstalled the whole last update it had just updated and it worked!

but before u can uninstall updates you need to login ur account

It also helps you to confirm that you are indeed trying the correct password. Once I had confirmed that i hadn't become senile overnight (at about the same time windows did it's update lol), uninstalling it was quite easy.

I seem to remember that in frustration I just did a long press on the stop button and turned it off for a while then turned it back on and it reset its self.

This fix worked for my Windows laptop. Thank You! How frustrating though. Just after suffering through the "password glitch" on the new iPad, which by the way is a bug fest. This technology is still a long way off from being reliable!

Sandie Johnson, you may have to create an account. If someone else set up the computer for you, you will need to ask them, or work with who you bought it from.

Also, I have heard of someone buying "new" computers that had personal data on the hard drive - meaning that someone used it and returned it. Again, work with the company or person who sold it to you.

OK - here is a very simple way to get around the problem which worked for me. As I read all of the comments, and did all of the “easy” checks of keyboards, etc. I realized this is problem with windows 10 updates, microsoft passwords, and completing updates. I wondered if there was a way to block microsoft. The only way I could think of was to make sure that the internet connection was turned off. That way your laptop is an “island”. When the internet connection was first turned off my password still did not work. Then I did a reboot from the settings on the password page. I immediately noticed the spinning circles again telling me it was working on an update. I got back to the password page, and put in my password. Instead of an error message, I got spinning circles for a few seconds - - and then I was in. Hit the “airplane” internet connection button, and you are back online all set to go. Hope this works for others.

I just created a new account went into that then restarted computer and could sign into my account. From there can delete other account, have chosen to keep it.

The answers on this page are not getting at the problem. I too have now encountered “wrong password” when trying to log in after computer has been sleeping. I’m 100% sure the pwd is correct (same one for a decade, no chance of being wrong). No one has mentioned this, but in my case I’m using an EXTERNAL keyboard. When I use the computer’s built in keyboard, I can log in fine. I have not changed my external keyboard in years, and it’s been working fine for years up till two days ago. As others have said, I can also log in using the on-screen keyboard. The fact that I can log in either of these two ways implies clearly what the problem is (in my case anyway): it has to do with the external keyboard.

This is clearly yet another bug introduced by the brilliant Microsoft Windows team. I’ve checked the drivers for my keyboard and Windows thinks I already have the latest drivers. So now, I’m completely at a loss. I have to log in with the built in keyboard apparently. Thanks Microsoft, for another blunder.

Hope this helps others: if you’re using an external keyboard, try logging in with the built-in one, or use the on-screen keyboard. Both ways work for me.

No, I'm not saying that. It's really simple: I described the problem I encountered and how I worked around it. I don't work for Microsoft and I did not imply anything about the existence of a fix. I'm not telling you what to do or what you need to live with. Maybe you don't understand what this web page is about.

I have the same problem but have learned over time that if I hit the backspace first, then enter my password it works every time.

Yes! Using the backspace solves a typical problem caused by the space bar any other key pressed for waking up the device. It is possible that some keys were pressed accidentally before the device woke up. It is good practice to use the backspace to clear up the characters registered in the password box prior to entering the actual password.

I started having this problem about a week ago. I found that if I click on “I forgot my password” then just close down the box that pops up, I can suddenly log in fine. Making the password visible showed me that for reasons unknown the numbers in my password were showing as if I was holding down the shift key. However the letters in the password were as they were supposed to be. I have no idea why this suddenly started. It’s annoying, but for now I have a work around :/

I had to ultimately format my entire laptop so if you have time then you can try and find how to repair it without formatting. But since i was short on time and couldn't work without laptop, i had no other option.

I saw there was an option “Log on by option not showed here” . pressed it and got almost an identical logon screen.

Suddenly all the numbers and letters of my password could be entered.

If this solution lasts more than 5 minutes I’ll be amazed, but here’s hoping. It worked tonight

Not so surprising it didn't recognise anything other than numbers. Silly me didn't realise that this particular"Confirm" log-on request was for me to use my Pincode, AGAIN, after I had already logged on to this machine, and even though I had used the same PinCode to re-log-on to my own computer several times during the day. Go figure.

So the previous entry was inaccurate, because those Windows bastards had managed to grind me down.

Today there is no problem; no daft messages about passwords and my account:

1 - I have confirmed my identity under Settings/Accounts

2- I have logged on my MS Outlook account directly online and in Office, and left them open.

3 - I have incidentally reloaded a reader extension for Chrome which was messing up my virus updates and/or messages. Just mentioning it.

Why not remove it and creat an new login password for Windows 10?Only in this way,you can login to Windows computer,if you have no idea about removing login password,you can refer to some content and software provided by Google.

This may be due to a keyboard error. You can use the on-screen keyboard to activate it with the Easy Access icon on the login screen. Click Easy Access> Onscreen Keyboard, then use your mouse to click on the letters and enter the correct password.

This exactly happened to me, and I figured a way to log in, What I just did is click on Sign-in options on the bottom of the password box and changed it to PIN, and it logged me in.
