NOT solved!
I tried this; recharging will not work for long. If you leave it plugged in for too long (a mere matter of hours...), it will fry the leads.
Philips should have continued to sell replacement batteries; but they're a bunch of jerks. If their sales aren't in the zillions, they always discontinue their products. Even if you buy this product unopened, it will by now not be working; the lithium battery will be shot and this replacement technique will not work.
For the best alternative, buy a Sony MP3 player new (at the time of this post, for a similar device I would recommend https://electronics.sony.com/audio/walkm...); not an aluminum case, but a hard plastic one. Not quite as rugged as the Philips, but good enough.
[NEVER buy a Sansa! I bought two and they went south in a matter of a couple of months. They now have a supposedly rugged one -I wouldn't trust it at all after that experience...]
For those who wonder why one would be interested in such a device in this era of smartphones: for security reasons, I use a dumbphone. I have no trust whatsoever of Andoid/Google or iPhone/Apple. A small device such as this lets me retain an ability to listen to songs on the go; the Sony model I cited has no Wifi -a vector for hacking. Most dumbphones have no decent mp3 player capability...

If the dimensions fit, you can try it out and see what happens.
