Hard Drive lcd power problems

I have a white 20 inch intel imac 2006/2007, power for the hard drive doesn't work and the lcd goes black after computer is on. if you set the computer to work on low brightness and connect the hard drive to an external power source, the computer will work ok.

Could it be a powersupply problem or the inverter?

Since your hard drive only works with an external drive, that would indicate a failed power supply. To check the inverter, hook up an external monitor. There are diagnostic lights to the right of the RAM slots on the logic board. Please let us know which ones are lit. For your EXACT model (and correct part numbers) please list the last three numbers of your serial number, located on the bottom of your stand.
