Having Download Decompression Problems

iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 24-Inch (Early 2009) 4 GB RAM

10.6.6

I'm having problems almost every time I attempt a Software update or other software download and update. I've replaced the hard drive, zeroed the drive, reformatted, installed Stuffit 14. TechTool Pro runs clear, 50 pass RAM check, Disk Utility runs clear, Norton Anti-Virus is clear. Yet almost every time I try to download a update I get a decompression error. If I download just one update at a time I can eventually get it to install.

Poor mayer - when you got a problem it's so weird that nobody knowns an answer, including me. I know your pain.

+ for the question--you and John have some of the weirdest problems.

I used to getthe same issue along with the actual install going to the install screen but hanging there... + For the question

I can't think of anything... If its not the HDD, then it must be the logic board? Or a component on it, such as RAM, CPU or less likely, the GPU?

Try replacing all the ram with just one good ram stick for starters.. I'm just spitballing some ideas here.

A way to circumvent the problem would be to download the updates directly from their site instead of using software update.

Already tried one stick at a time in each slot. There is no problem with the video. Replacing the logic board? You sound like a "Apple Genius" a new board is $1988 and a used one $900. I can tell my customer it may or may not fix the problem. But thanks for the suggestion.

So do updates work when you download them directly from apple.com?

tarafından

I had already gotten the updates to install by downloading them one at a time. A couple had to be done multiple times. After installing the new system, I HAD TO RUN DISK UTILITY THREE TIMES AND THEN REPAIR WITH TECH TOOLS PRO TO GET IT TO ACCEPT ONE AT A TIME. sorry 'bout the caps. Will now run them again to see if the updates introduced new errors.

Sounds to

me like check sum errors, would indicate network problems, that may have nothing to do with your end.

I ran software update a couple of hours ago, it went through on four different machines. If it is network I doubt if its at Apple's end. Does anyone know how Software Update works? FTP, HTTP, etc.?

tarafından

I updated my 2.8 quad core over the same network to 10.6.6 an hour later with no problems.

zapping PRAM did not work, replacing RAM did not work, re-installing OS did not work...

For the time being, my work-around is to create another admin level account. Within that account, it seems to do fine....
