HDD to SSD

Hi

I have a MacBook Air rev A.

It has an 80GB HDD.

Is it as simple as buying a 64GB SSD drive from ebay and swapping?

Thanks.

Joseph.

Update

Thanks for the advice.

I think I have found a 64GB SSD Drive for £140.

But is it worth this money, will I see a big difference in performance/battery etc.

Also, to balance out the cost I would want to sell my 80GB drive, is this the same thing that is in iPod Classics?

Joseph,

Keep in mind that as mentioned above not just any SSD drive will do.

If you search eBay you will find many SSD drives but note that many are 2.5 inch drives designed to replace the typical laptop hard drive. The Macbook air original hard drives are 1.8 inch drives (ie not as thick)

More importantly the connectors and connection method must be the same in order to perform a simple swap as you desire.

For A1237 the original Air version the connector is a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connector and the connection is PATA. For the A1304, the connector is a LIF (Low Insertion Force) and the connection is SATA.

There are not many drives that work. One is Runcore Another is Photofast.

It would be a good idea to review this thread that discusses compatibility of SSD with macbook air.

Hope that helps.

As long as you get a SSD drive that is compatible with your original machine, it's that easy! No other parts need be swapped.

Apple changed hard drive cables with the second revision (A1304) with connectors that are incompatible with the original version (A1237), so you must be sure the SSD drive you buy has the correct connector. The part number is 661-4581 for the original Apple part. Plugging this number in may or may not help.

Good luck!

Here is the iFixIt guide I followed.

This guide was very helpful and accurate for our A1304 Air, I have commented/adjusted the guide to give some extra info which I felt was missing, useful for identifying the correct model/revision and related replacement part.

I fitted a RunCore 128GB SSD to our A1304 (Revision B) Air, it was easy enough and works exactly as we hoped! The A1304 (Revision B) model Air has a LIF connector. RunCore have different SSD products for the different Air revisions, it would be easy to order the wrong part, so be sure you you what modle/revision of Air you're working on!

Read the guide in full for, for all the details.

I don't believe that 80gb is a hard drive, it should be an SSD, so why would you want to replace an 80 gb with only 64gb?

Hello, i was searching for disks on ebay, i found this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zheino-1-8-ZIF-S...

I just wanted some advice, if this disk would work with my A1237 and if anyone has any past experience,

Thank you!

While I have not used this exact drive I see no reason why it wouldn't work. It meets the basic requirements 1.8" with a ZIF connector. I would recommend getting a ZIF to USB adapter so you can connect the drive externally to test it and set it up.
