Why doesn't keyboard and trackpad work after battery replacement?

I replaced a dead battery on my MacBook Pro and now the keyboard and trackpad aren't working. The battery works fine, but the fans come on like gangbusters and won't go off. I can use a remote keyboard and plug in mouse but the fans blow and blow. I did my best to reconnect the track board ribbon but clearly something is amiss. Help!

Replaced battery. Responds to startup key. No other keys nor trackpad work at all. I can force shut down using command-shift-option-power but nothing else. Replaced ribbon with another used ribbon with no difference.

I had same issue,

Replaced ribbon no help. The ribbon connection at the track pad end was the issue for me. removed ribbon from connector, then used a flat ended plastic tool to compress connector (push top towards circuit board) and making a tighter connection. reassembled and works again.

Had the same issue – after carefully replacing the battery on a A1052, the keyboard & trackpad wouldn't work no matter how I tried to reconnect the ribbon at both ends. The fans didn't go crazy, as in several comments here.

Replaced the ribbon (bought a new one), and everything is ok now!

@zoliaxk where did you get the ribbon?

It sounds to me like something just isn't connected properly. IIRC there's a temp sensor integrated into the touchpad, and if it's disconnected the fans will run full blast. I'd probably just re-do the repair and reseat each connector really carefully, making sure the ribbons are straight and fully inserted, and that they aren't connected upside-down or damaged in any way. Let us know what you find. Good luck!

Yeah I would recommend doing what Jeff said. If the trackpad isn't clicking anymore something went wrong during the battery replacement. Resetting NVRAM and SMC won't fix that. I would just open it up again and redo it very carefully.

Also you should be able to reset NVRAM and SMC via USB keyboards for future reference.

Thank you for your support. I will try opening it up again.

Good news! I replaced the keyboard/trackpad ribbon, and everything is working perfectly! Thanks for all your help!

After changing a new battery A1331 for a 2009 Macbook "click" does not work. After following your advice I reinstalled to noavail. However I did use the Command Option F5 and was able to click on most items to gain some functionality but not all. I took the battery out again I noticed on the new battery a removable plastic piece "hotdog" shaped immediately to the right of the center black screw along the top where the connector cable for the battery is located. It was not on the old battery. NSK-C4 818-0952 is stamped on the back of the piece.

I don't often return to thank previous posters, but I certainly feel compelled this time. Replacing the flex ribbon cable did the trick! I was dubious, especially as the original piece looked so pristine, but there you go. Done. New battery installed and now have my KB and trackpad back again.

Have you tried reseting the PRAM/NVRAM or SMC?

Thank you--this was one of the first things I tried. The keyboard doesn't work, so pushing down keys, even to reset these, has no effect. It does light up, though. I tried with the computer off, and I tried with it on. I tried with a bluetooth keyboard. I turned bluetooth on and off. Nothing works.

At this point the computer works with a bluetooth keyboard and plug-in mouse. The problem is the fans going full speed, which tells me something is wrong. The computer was fine before I changed the battery--it turned on when plugged in, and the keyboard and trackpad worked. Now the trackpad won't click, so I have obviously done something wrong putting the thing back together. I have done successful repairs on another MacBook pro, but I'm afraid this one made a mess of things on this trackpad/battery assembly. Thanks though, for your help.

A new trackpad/keyboard ribbon fixed everything! Not only are both now working perfectly, but the fans have stopped (though they still work). Thanks for your help!

I had the problem after replacing my battery that the touchpad would move the mouse pointer but it wouldn’t left or right click. I looked at the original battery pack and realized a thin metal covering that went over the touchpad was pulled off when i removed the battery. I pealed it off the original battery and put it back over the touchpad and reinstalled the new battery. It fixed the problem and everything is working well know.

any chance you have a pic of what this thin metal covering looks like? I am having this same problem and looked at the old battery and dont see anything

@buster0535 YES! I am having all of these issues on a mid 2015 15” MBP. All fine before the battery replacement, now new battery is in and working well but the trackpad and keyboard are both not working. The only button that works isn’t the power key for some odd reason. And the fans run full blast, thinking a temperature sensor issue.

Do you have a pic of this Metal Covering???

Gracias,

-M

This thread was a life saver. I had this exact same problem after changing out badly swollen battery on 2017 MBP. My trackpad and keyboard worked fine before battery change but stopped working after new battery installed and both fans going full speed non-stop. Did all the resets and recommendations but nothing worked. Took to two different “computer fix it” places who told me 2017 “tough to repair” (?) and that I “probably” needed a new logic board. I found this thread and ordered a new trackpad with ribbon on ebay. Just installed and it fixed everything. MBP back to normal. What a life saver.

Can you post the link to the trackpad and ribbon? (But only necessary if the MBP was an early 2015 retina model, or just like it.) Thanks!

Tim, Apple have quite a very different designs, so one needs to be exact here! What is your exact system? To verify plug your S/N here EveryMac - Lookup let us know what it returned for your model.

I just replace the battery on a macbook pro 13" early 2015. I notice that the click on the mouse pad is gone, but the mouse and the keyboard is still in function. After I have been using the mac for couple days, then I notice that the keyboard and the mouse just falls out and I have to restart the mac to get the keyboard and mouse working again.

Have someone in here had the same experience?

could it be defect keyboard/mouse ribbon?.

I have reset NVRAM and SMC, but still the same problem

I encountered this and somehow fixed it. Read the long post + my own follow up comment... It seems every kbd+trackpad -> battery disconnect and battery -> kbd+trackpad reconnect takes a risk of screwing up kbd/trackpad firmware state.
