Dryer with loud rumbling noise every 20 to 40 seconds, lasting 5 sec

Hi,

I have a Maytag Dryer. For the last month it's been making a loud rumbling noise (it's in the garage and we can hear it in the house.) The noise is not rhythmic but consistently comes every 20-40 seconds. It's not a bang but a 5 second rumble that kind of crescendos and then fades away. It seems to be louder when I put in a heavier load. I've also noticed that some loads take 3-4 times longer to dry. I just checked on a load that I had in for 30 minutes and the clothes were not warm at all.

What do you think is going on? What parts do you think need to be replaced?

Cause 1

Drive Belt

The drive belt is a very long, slender belt that wraps all the way around the dryer drum, around a tension pulley, and then around the drive motor. Over time, the drive belt can become frayed or otherwise damaged. If the drive belt is frayed or damaged, the dryer will be noisy as it turns. Inspect the drive belt for signs of wear. If the drive belt is worn, replace it.

Cause 2

Drum Roller

One or more of the drum rollers might be worn out. Many dryers have two drum support rollers on the rear of the drum, and some dryers have two more rollers supporting the front of the drum. When the drum rollers are worn out, they can cause the dryer to make a loud rumbling noise. To determine if the rollers are worn out, inspect the rollers. If one or more of the rollers are severely worn, we recommend replacing all of the rollers at the same time as a preventative measure. (The roller shaft can often be reused if it is in good condition. Clean the shaft thoroughly before installing the new rollers.)

Cause 3

Drum Roller Axle

One or more of the drum roller axles might be worn out. Most dryers have two drum support rollers on the rear of the drum, and some dryers have two more rollers supporting the front of the drum. Over time, the drum rollers and axles wear out, causing the dryer to make a loud rumbling noise. To determine if the drum roller axles are worn out, remove the belt from the dryer and try turning the drum by hand. If the drum does not rotate freely, check the support rollers for wear. If the rollers spin freely without wobbling, the axles do not need to be replaced. If a roller wobbles and/or does not spin freely, we recommend replacing all of the axles and rollers as a preventative measure.

I had the same problem and the description of the noise caught my eye in particular - 5s crescendo every 30- 40s.

My dryer doesnt have rollers. The front of the drum rides on a strip of felt with 3 teflon pads for easier slippage. One was totally worn through so i thought that was the cause but not quite. After i oiled the felt a little and put it back together the noise remained the same.

It turned out to be the fan rotor was loose on the shaft and hitting the casing as it was spinning. New rotor is ordered and on its way.

But i still found this post helpful. Thank you!

Is it expensive to fix? Or is it easier to buy a new dryer. Mine is a condenser dryer is there is any differences. The noise is constant and very loud. Pl help

mark Please start a new question and give us your specifics. A belt is $5-6 dollars a drum much more, so i can't answer you until I know more.

Gee, I just wish that my problems were as easily fixed, my Maytag heavy duty dryer is only 5 months old and it’s making a loud knocking noise every time the drum turns, I use it several times a week, I called Maytag and they said that it happens when the dryer is not used very much, but I have six kids, mine gets used a lot. But they never really could answer my question about why it’s doing Pithecanthropus knocking. The said they were going to send a technician out, but they have called twice and rescheduled the appointment. So, I’m just not sure what they will do.
