Engine Oil Leak in rear crankcase

Oil leaks down to rear crankcase and drips from there. Any suggestions as to source. I cannot see valve cover without dissassembly. How can this be fixed?

I also assume it is a good possibility it is a valve cover leaking. On older cars it is possible to tighen the hold down fasteners. I cannot even see where the valve covers are. It would probably be the rear cover. Any suggestions.

The first step I would undertake is to thoroughly clean the engine. I am not sure where you are located but around here I would go to a self serve car wash and use the pressure wand to spray it all clean. Use an engine degreaser and apply it as well to the back of the engine and the top of the bell housing. You should also spray from the underside and clean of as much of the oil, grease and debris as you can get. Let the engine dry for a while. The perfect way would of course be a ramp or a hoist where you could look under the vehicle. Sometimes oil change stations can provide you with that as well. Anyhow ones your engine and undercarriage is clean you can let the engine run and see if you can isolate the source. It is most certainly possible that it is the valve cover gasket, as well as the rear main crankshaft seal or the pan gasket itself. Also, if you have an automatic transmission it may be leaking from the font of the transmission intake shaft. Unless you clean it, inspect it and isolate the leak, there are to many variables to positively identify your leak. Good luck

So it's coming from the valve cover area? If so, you need to replace the gaskets.

Don't forget to come back and mark whichever answer, if any, answers your question.

I have determined the oil leak seems to be coming from around the oil pan gasket or possibly from the rear (car rear) from a tube or pipe that is fastened toward the rear by a bolt. This is behind the engine. Possibly there is an o ring or gasket there that is leaking. I was able to tighten this bolt a half a turn or so but still seems to be oil sepage there. The leaking oil gathers right at the drain plug which I also replaced with a new Ford plug. I added a gasket sealer to the crankcase oil and that did not seem to work although the drip may have slowed either from that product or the tightened bold. All the crankcase bolts seem tight.

does it leak between the engine and the transmission?

No, if the case behind the engine and to the rear of the car is the transmission. As if mentioned, there is a tube bolted to this case by a bolt which I tightened. The oil accumulates at the bottom of the drain plug and surrounding oil pan area and also on the heads of the front oil pan bolts but the area above is dry. Hope that helps.

I have the exact issue with my 2012 3.0 fusion. The oil is gathering at the rear of the oil pan and oil plug. It seems the oil is at times hitting the main belt to the rear of the passenger side tire causing oil to be thrown multiple areas. I am guessing the oil leak is the main rear seal or possibly coming from the bottom of the timing chain cover.
