G5 Bad Memory Block

Hi,

Just purchased a used Sept 2004 G5, everything seems fine except when I ran TechTool, surface scan shows one bad memory block - is this fixable, and if not, is this a major issue? Thanks in advance for the advice!

Start up from your system installation disk holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities -> Disk Utility. Reformat the drive and use the "write zeros" option. This will map out and block and bad blocks.

Thanks for the reply mayer - unfortunately no disks were included, so I will need to track some down via eBay, etc. I've read that TechTool Pro can sometimes be over-aggresive in IDing bad blocks - is there any other program/method that can double-check this, as I don't want to have to wipe the drive if I don't have to...

I've never used my TechTools to format a drive. I didn't even know it would.

I was questioning TechTool's initial diagnosis of the bad block, not using TechTool to reformat - sorry for any confusion.

Your machine will run up to 10.5.8. With 10.5 you gain Time Machine but lose the ability to run OS9 within 10. Of course with the large hard drives available you can partition and have multiple operating systems to boot from. If you have something like Toast and a good dual layer optical drive get the full retail 10.5 as high as you can. I like to use a back up copy for everyday use and store my originals ;-) You will most likely have to leave a search in with eBay for an original installation disk for your machine but you may want it because it has the AHT diagnostic software on it and fan syncing software which is needed if any major components are changed.

Thanks so much mayer, zeroed out the drive, ran TechTool's surface scan again and no bad block! Perfect - thanks again!
