Directional buttons not responsive

On my original PS4 controller (got another one when I upgraded to PS4 Pro), the up, down, left and right buttons just one day decided they didn't want to work anymore. I've tried resetting the controller, a number of times, with the same result, which leads me to believe it's not the signal to the PS4 but rather something within the controller itself. I'm not too keen on opening it up and it could not be the buttons themselves anyway but maybe a cable that goes from that area to the rest of the controller? Does anyone have any DIY advice before I break down and pay a bench fee?

I have a problem similar to this but only with the up on the D-Pad it doesn't stop going up and it does this with my analog stick and I have to press down on the d-pad and push down on the analog stick to make it stop going up. Any help?

I have the same issue… Left, Right and Up buttons not working. Down is working:) it is interesting. Reset did not fix it.

I opened it and everything look sharp. Printed circuit looks brand new to me, so i started to think it is something mysterious happening… Maybe about the software, I do not know.

Exact same issue here

I have the same issue about up, right, left buttons.. down is still working, and all the others.. i opened it up but everytihng looks fine. Dont know what to do

it is possible that the button connections on the circuit board have worn down but can be replenished by using a pencil on those points because of the graphite from it, obviously you would have to take it apart and use ifixit's guide.

Thanks. I don't know enough about the controller's inner workings to confidently take it apart and do a "trial and error." I was kind of looking for someone to say, "hey I had the same problem. I did this and it worked from then on." I do appreciate your input though. :)

tarafından

Hey I had the same problem, haha, I just bought mine from a old shop, looks new but the dpad all are not responsive others are okay tho, did you fix yours?

tarafından

I ended up actually finding a YouTube tuturial on how to open it up and clean it out. it didn't work out well though and i just messed it up even more. I ended up having to buy a used controller so I could sell it with my old PS4.

tarafından

My own problem is different, my dpad is working only when you want to select but when you want to play a match it won't work again so I use only analog, how will I fix it

tarafından

I can't seem to find anymore information on this graphite method. Is it used on the conductive ribbon that the buttons contact or the actual circuit board? Which points would it be applied to?

I don't know if its an issue with PS4 pads generally but I have bought pads that some of the buttons will stop working after some weeks of playing FIFA. I think the flex of PS4 pads have been designed to be soo fragile. Any strain of dust or liquid will make it to stop responding. PS3 pads were not like this. Why PS4? It's really not fair Sony…

How can I get my direction pad to work again

It’s the right one only and I’m allways using button assignments for different options

I tried the pencil trick on the contacts, but didn't work. Finally I bought the conductive film replacement and it's all back to life. I had a hard time finding some in stock in the usual Chinese websites (like being informed two months after the purchase that there was none in stock and I'd be getting a refund). Finally I found one, allegedly shipped from the UK, on a website called fruugo. Attached are the photos of the product.

Note: this specific SKU in the photo is for the DS4 v1. Pay attention to which model you have (v2 shows the LED through the TouchPad)

It's a bad trace I lost all d pad directions except down.

When I did a continuity test I discovered the common path that's in series on each direction stopped after down. When I looked closely with the microscope I could see the next direction left had material rubbed away right near the pad I will try to upload a photo. As for fixing I have a pen for fixing traces I'm going to try to draw a new path there and then probably mask the edge with a little tape so that it can't rub there anymore.

I expected this to be something related to a trace, when repairing things you got to look at probability and statistics. Was not going to lose three my direction pads instantly so it was most likely not a worn down pad. Or any grime or build up that kind of stuff does not happen instantly. my controllers never had water or other things dumped on them.

This was the same with mine - use a multi-meter (set to ohm or kilo-ohm) or another continuity tester to check contact between the black contacts which should be connected together by the line traces on the keypad membrane (film). On my DS4, there was a break between the left half of the 'down' pad, and the bottom half of the 'left' pad, as well as other breaks in the same area (e.g. top left trigger was unreliable).

The fix is a new membrane. You must get a membrane which matches the white part-number printed on the mainboard of your DS4 (in my case this was JDM-011). My cost for this was about $/€3 (locally posted in Europe), or about half that if posted direct from China. Search terms I used were "DS4 film" but you could also try some of: ps4 playstation4 controller membrane.

Double-check motherboard version, but I think these are also colour-coded (JDM-011 is green).

Only the down on my d- pad is effected. sometimes it would other times it wouldn't. I gave it a shake and it worked again. Must be something loose in there

Mine and Bretts advice of replacing the film d pad contacts will fix this as well.

Haha thanks for this. Gave mine a good shake and now it's working fine.

Try buying a new DPAD kit for it or replacing the whole motherboard to it.

Nothing much you can do other than that, you have cleaned, took it apart, and put it back… etc etc. Nobody else could tell you do something that would fix it.

You need to replace the contacts for the d pad on the board it self its real easy to do and is just like a round piece of tape with the contacts on, So just a case of peal of and replace.

I posted a quick video where I test the continuity between the traces on the film that holds the button contacts. It would seem Sony’s manufacturing process might even be faulty here, as there is no visible break between the contact and the trace, but no continuity or very low (mega ohms of resistance) continuity happens between pads. This is wrong.

Here is the video where you can see me test: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zGn2A3D...

I found a replacement. Apparently there are different boards? Pay special attention to the board version when purchasing a replacement.

My controller now works that I tried the pencil trick too! Weird, it seems the contacts were COMPLETELY degraded.

tarafından

I ordered the conductive film from a popular chinese shopping site, but after two months I just saw that they say there's none in stock and gave me a refund. I tried the pencil trick, didn't fix it. At this time, on one of my controllers, only one of the D-pad directions works (it went from 2/4 to 3/4 broken). I just ordered conductive film from another website (fruugo) and it's been shipped from the UK. I'm hoping this will fix it and that the issue is not the rubber thingies instead.

tarafından

@lilithelotor where did you use the pencil? On the rubber button part, or on the contacts on the conductive film? I tried it too, but to no avail. I'm waiting for conductive film replacement, but now I'm thinking if I should have ordered the rubber parts as well.

With the PS5 coming out later this year, I just need my older controllers to work as backups anyway, but I hate wasting electronics when they can be easily repaired.

I don’t have a PS4 controller but I’ve been fixing unreliable PS3 controller pads not by using pencil but eraser. I’m not sure if it is about some oxidation or other residue but that seems to clean up the contacts.

You can also try isopropyl alcohol (ispropanol / IPA / rubbing alcohol) with a cotton bud ("Q Tip").
