Time for new battery?

iPod video, 2nd hand, medium condition.

Its battery zeroes at 3 hrs.

What's the "normal" power duration for a device like this?

Does its battery need replacement?

If you're only getting three hours of battery life, the battery's probably pretty worn down. According to Apple, you should get up to 14 hours music playback on a 30 GB iPod Video and 20 hours on the 60/80 GB iPod Video. Here's the Apple source, including their specific testing procedure:

Fortunately, replacing the battery in an iPod Video is both pretty easy and not that expensive. There one thing to watch out for is that you get the correct battery, as there are two different batteries for the iPod Video. There's a thinner battery for the 30 GB model, and a thicker one for the 60/80 GB model.

You guessed it. By now an iPod 5th gen second hand would be around 3 hours of battery life in my experience.

You can go for the battery replacement. I've already replaced the battery in my ipod 3rd gen twice.

You can also even go to the Apple store and at the genius bar ask if you can pay for an out of warranty battery replacement ipod. These can cost around 50 bucks. I would say thats a great deal if the only problem is the battery. You can get a new unit (same generation) just for exchanging the old one + paying 50.

I took apart a 5th Gen iPod with Video 80Gb to replace a cracked screen. Wasn't too had just make sure you get one of those plastic prying things to get the metal back off. Don't use a screw driver because you'll end up chewing up the plastic fascia pretty bad and it might not fit back on.

For reference, you get 20hrs playback if you don't change the song because the hdd spins up only once to load the song into the flash buffer. I only ever got about 9-10 hours of real use out of it.
