Leslie List and just to add to the excellent answer by @pccheese if that does not work you want to consider a failed image sensor or the CMOS sensor assembly. These guides Canon EOS 60D Motherboard Replacement will at least get you into the camera.

There are many causes for this. First, make sure your exposure value (E/V) is set to 0 or a positive number.

The built-in meter could be off. Test this by using manual settings. Go outside on a sunny day, and set your camera to these settings: ISO 100, Shutter speed 1/500, and F-stop F8. Point the camera at something well lit (Preferably white), and shoot. If the exposure is good, then there is something wrong with the built in meter.

Another test, to check your shutter. Take the lens off, set the camera to expose for 10 seconds, and make sure the shutter opens the moment you press the shutter release button.
