Custom Build Computer Shuts off Immediately After Turning On

Good Day Everyone,

So here's my story:

I am swapping out a motherboard in my gaming PC to accommodate more Ram and in the future more graphics cards. I was running 16gb RAM from 2 DDR4-2400 sticks 8gb each and I'm swapping from an mATX motherboard to an ATX just with more RAM installed and nothing else. The MOBO is a Gigibyte z370. My build:

Intel core-i5 7500

Gtx 1060 6gb

32 gb ram ddr4 2400

1200 watt psu

Z370 motherboard

250gb Samsung SSD

I worked and played on this machine (with the old mATX) for a few weeks no problem and when I switched the motherboard today I go to turn it on and it cuts off immediately. I went through checking each component and found nothing wrong with the setup. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

What happens if you disconnect everything except the RAM, the monitor and a keyboard? Does it pass POST?

If it still fails, what happens if you remove the RAM? Do you get beep error codes (for missing RAM) or does it still fail?

Unfortunately motherboards these days do not come with a CMOS speaker, so a motherboard speaker would need to be plugged in to hear the sound.

Did you already try the old two sticks of ram to see if it would post?

Try doing a CMOS reset which should be explained how to in your motherboard manual.

I actually put a speaker onto the mobo to check it out from another because this one does have the slot for it. It does not emmit a sound whatsoever so I am now checking on the rare fact that the mobo does not support my i5 7500 and needs an 8th gen processor.

What motherboard is it. We can check the CPU compatibility list for the motherboard.

Hi @benjamen50 ,

Oops!

Thanks for the heads up re the mobo speaker. Showing my age and getting out of touch.

Here is the mobo from the OP's question Gigabyte z370.

Cheers.

That's just the chipset of the motherboard. We need the exact model of the motherboard.

Hi @benjamen50 ,

Oops x 2.

Going from bad to worse ;-(

i thought the z370 is only compatible with 8th gen Intel CPU's? if it was a z270, they're compatible with 7th gen Intel CPU's. You have a 7th gen Intel CPU (i5-7500) so the new motherboards aren't backwards compatible, everything else will work, you will just need to get a new CPU =), if anything you can use http:www.pcpartpicker.com to help find compatibility in the future.

you mean Z270 can have both Skylake and Kaby Lake, they are both 6th and 7th generation Intel CPU's, the Coffee Lake microarchitecture is the new 8th gen, even though they are all LGA 1511 sockets, the Coffee Lake 8th gen processors can only run on Intel z370 chipsets.

Yeah I just confused myself for a second.. I'll delete my previous comment.

You are right though, motherboard does not support CPU so either motherboard or CPU needs to be swapped to the correct chipset or generation which pcpartpicker helps out with.
