Cannot open the printer cover to replace ink cartridges

I had a very frustrating problem with my printer - I think actually a firmware bug from Epson. It would go back and forth between saying Replace Ink Cartridges and another error about invalid ink cartridge detected. There is a lock where you cannot open the top unless it gets out of this state but it was stuck in that state.

And here is the answer that even Epson support didn't know (they claimed it was a HW issue which it was not). There is a small rectangular slot on the front right of the cover. Gently push a screwdriver or the point of a scissor down into that and it releases the top!

I was then able to replace the ink cartridges and all was well again.

where exactly is the slot? Don't see anything to the right of the ink hatch cover. I can lift the right side of the cover but the left side is locked down tight. Don't want to break it, though people have said they've forced it open

there is a small square on the display side of the scanner glass one for each side lock to open the panel

It was so simple I had to record it here, for you, my Boomer friends (and me in case I forget.) INSTRUCTIONS: So… the cover needs to be CLOSED then lift the second cover to expose internal workings of printer. Then “gentle as butter” just flip up that %#*@ ink cartridge lid.

I swear, when I watched the Epson video and they started with an OPEN PRINTER I briefly hated them. I fiddled around with firm pressing and such, never a good idea when dealing with plastic, and then, just wanted to smack my printer. grrrrrrrr. NOT INTUITIVE for those of us who don’t care how a toaster is made, just how it works. I demand a video redo from #EPSON.

I have to add I LOVE this printer. Ink lasts a long time and I’m thrilled not to have to use those awful cartridges.

Oh my gosh!!!!!! I have just tried to figure this out for the last hour! Your answer was the ONLY one that solved my problem. The Epson instructional video is completely wrong. Thank you for your help!

Thank you so much!!! I have killed an entire evening on this. Every demonstration starts with the lid open. This has been one of the most maddening devices I have ever owned. As soon as the pandemic is over, I am going to Costco to get another HP!!!

For my Workforce 7710 I had to do the following when the scanner open lid error presented itself when trying to change out ink cartridges:


Settings > Maintenance > Ink Cartridge Replacement > Start


Simply opening the printer to where the cartridges are, did not auto set the ink holder to be able to open and lift the lid to replace cartridges without following these steps through the screen settings.


Hope this helps someone if they are having issues in 2020 with the latest firmware.

I was also able to achieve success, once I opened it this way, by pushing down pretty hard on the front right corner of the scanner lid. Engaging that little square…huge design flaw, indeed!

I am able to install ink after opening cover as far as it will go, (only part way) and opening the ink cartridge cover, then I had to let the printer cover rest of the top of the ink cartridge opened cover. The cover will not open all the way after ink cartridges are full, it only opens part way and has to be held so it doesn’t close. Ridiculous!!

My problem is closing the cover after I added ink in the Epson ET2760. I just bought this today. It's like an internal latch is stuck

@Workforce TAG My Epson ink holder cannot be moved either way cannot reach my cartridges

It is hiding in plain sight!! This initially stumped me too. Then I went through the Menu options. There is an option “Change Ink Cartridge”. This moved the Cartridge Door to the right spot! That was so easy!

The instructions fail to tell you that you must first initialize the unit; Set the language; time; date etc. Then the unit will come alive and move the print head and ink box, This is for WF 7840

I perceive that you simply need help concerning substitution cartridges because the exit door doesn't open. Fabulous description and superb diagnosis of the difficulty before posting. praise to you for that.

To assist you with correct data i might require a lot of information regarding this.

  • Did you check the printer’s user orient the way to replace cartridges?

For a begin please perform these steps:

Please perform a hard reset by following these steps:

  • Turn on the printer.
  • Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  • Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer. If your printer has a network or wireless connection, leave it connected.
  • Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet or power strip.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to a wall outlet.

  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer for details check this site.
  • Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  • The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
  • Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

If the printer is current associate degreed you've got problems with gap the gate of the cartridge you'll contact the native store to come it for an exchange if it's at intervals the Store’s return window.
