battery bay latch won't slide open to replace battery

This is an HP Pavilion DM4-3055DX. The battery needs to be replaced. However, the latch to open the bay won't slide open to release the battery. I don't want to force it too hard. I figure I need to remove the back cover to get to the latch mechanism and battery. Is this a reasonable approach? Are there any specifics out there to remove the back cover of this laptop?

Thank you in advance!

Bob

Hi,

To get to the "back" cover you have to almost completely dis-assemble the laptop, (not the lid assembly components) doing this whilst the battery is still connected to the motherboard and supplying power to it. The laptop may be "off" but the power is not isolated from the motherboard.

This is not be the safest approach to take and may not even work.

To remove the motherboard may not even be physically possible with the battery still in situ.

Here is a link to the service manual for your laptop, taken from this HP webpage

Scroll to p.89 to view the "back cover" when everything has been removed.

Here is the image taken from p.89 showing the position of the latch mechanism. As you can see everything in the base has to be removed to get at it.

You may either have to push down on the battery release latch or perhaps the battery to see if you can get the latch to slide.

Hopefully this is of some help.

Thank you Jayeff. I did see that about every disassembly step required the battery to be removed first. I was hoping that since there was 'no apparent' charge in the battery, I could get away with it. Obviously, there might still be residual energy in the battery. I have tried several different pressure points to release the latch. Looks like this is going to be a real problem to get the battery out! Thank you for responding!
