Upgrade 5th gen. classic with 6th gen. logic board?

Wife's Ipod has audio problem. Discovered it is the logic board. Can I use a 6th gen. logic board with her 5th gen. parts and case.

I have done similar upgrades with desktop computers and from the pictures I've seen they have similar layouts and connectors on them.I just don't don't want to blow the fifty bucks on a new board to have it fail.

Looks like a 5th gen classic with an 80gb toshiba hard drive.

Cory, check the following answers to see what is involved with that upgrading hard drive from 30 GB to 80 GB and Upgrading the 30gig drive to a 120 gig thin 5mm and last but not least Parts interchangeble with 5gen iPod? so as you can see there is lots of information on here and it should help you to reach a decision. There are also plenty of options to get the 5th gen logic board relatively inexpensive and then you will not have any difficulty with compatibility. Good Luck

Cory,

Just to sum it up, if you were to order a 6th Generation logic board and install it in your iPod 5th generation, it will not work.

- The models use two different LCD screens. In addition, the ribbon and connectors our shifted sideways by millimeters.

- The clickwheel circuitry are different and can't be interchanged.

- The midframe that supports the LCD and logic board is different. The 6th gen has a deeper recess in it's frame. This will hender the click wheel buttons almost unusable. It is possible to adhere something on the logic board to compensate for the added depth, but it can be a paid in the butt to do.

I hope that this helps.

Yup, Big help and as I have researched the parts I found evidence of everything you said except for the fact about the 6th gen having a deeper recess in the frame. However I can visualize the recess as I look at the 6th gen's click wheel and face plate.

I know where my confusion came from. The first few places I went while looking for parts had a photo of the 5th gen logic board on there 6th gen listing. Now that I have seen actual photos of the 6th gen parts I see that it is possible but not practical or economical.

The only way I would do the 6th gen in a 5th gen now is if I got the parts for free.

Cory, I have done this. It kinda works but the click wheel is recessed slightly but still functional. The lcd works but is negative colours and shades. But it still works. Although through my own experience with iPods I just did this to see if it was possible. The 5.5th gen classic ipod has the best DAC on-board of any ipod released to date. So in reality there is no point in doing this other than having the new interface. I prefer the old. I don't like the split screen. I have put everything back to normal though. And upgraded my 5.5th gen ipod with 1tb and 3000mah battery. It lives for weeks

i took a look at both logic boards, my guess is no because the placement of the chipsets are different from both models.

I asked a guy who sells the parts. The LCD and click wheel would also have to be swapped but as long as the parts fit I'm good. Now do I spend 120.00 bucks on parts or just buy a new one?

Why not just replace the logicboard on the 5th gen for ~50$

The idea was to upgrade while replacing the logicboard and have a new iPod in an old shell. I will be replacing the board with a 5th gen.
