Since you didn't specify what type of AC you have, I'll basically try to give you some ideas on how to go about this in 2 different cases.
Central air
1. on a central air conditioner, you will need to locate the leak. this can be done by adding a small amount of freon and using a leak detector to siff out the leak. check out the condenser coils (outside unit) for damage check all tubing connection joints then move to the evaporator (inside unit) check the coils and all tubing connection points. If you can locate the leak and it is a joint then it must be resoldered.
2. if you think you have corrected the leak you will then need a vacuum pump to pull a vacuum on the system to remove any air containing moisture. You can get most auto parts stores to loan you one for a deposit. Vacuum the system overnight turn off vacuum pump and see if the system holds the vacuum. If the vacuum holds then you will need freon and gages to recharge the system. I would call a ac repair company to do this. Most Companies specify the number of pounds of freon you unit takes. If you have long runs of tubing, you may need a few more pounds. consult a pressure temperature chart to see what suction pressure equates to about 40 degrees. add freon till the suction pressure is at that point. There is a-lot more to consider and professional help should be obtained.
Automotive Air
1. you must still locate the leak. Some older cars use high pressure rubber hoses which can leak over a long period of time and rough handeling. you can add some freon and use dish soap and water to wet the hoses and look for bubbles. If found those hoses must be replaced, be sure to get the proper sealent for the hose joints. If the leak cant be found under the hood then the evaporator is probable the next place to look. you will need a snifer to check this out. Removing the evaporator is a major job for a novice.
2. if you find and repair the leak use a vacuum pump to clear any moist air that may have entered the system. check to see if the vacuun holds. if it does then you need to recharge the system. Consult a presure temperature chart to see what suction pressure equates to about 40 degrees. for your freon type.
home window unit
1.now you may need some help, there are no places to connect gages. you will need to purchase 2 saddle valves one for the high-pressure line and one for the low-pressure side. once installed pressurize the system with freon and use a leak detector or soapy water to locate the leak if it’s in the coils then replace the unit.
