Keyboard and Trackpad not working. Power button does.

I have recently acquired a MacBook 4.1 - 2.1GHz "Penryn". The problem is that the keyboard and the trackpad isn't working at all, I'm beginning to suspecting the motherboard. (There ware no liquid damage)

The top case with the keyboard and the trackpad have been replaced with brand new ones and still no go. Upon visual inspection I cannot see anything wrong with the connector on the motherboard. Oh and the power button works as well as USB ports and everything else.

Anyone has any clue ?

Update: I took the laptop to a repair shop and they have diagnosed that either it is a southbridge problem and they can resolder the southbridge witch would cost about 160$ but it would be a 50/50 chance it would work OR it is a microscopic fracture in the motherboard and it is not repairable.

If you have an external keyboard or mouse, use it to navigate to system profiler (Mac HD/Applications/Utilities/system profiler) Then click on USB, see if it says apple internal keyboard/trackpad. If it doesn't then its probably not connected properly or a loose connection.

Good luck.

I doesn't show up in the system profiler. And i'm quite sure i have connected it properly. I'll triple check just to be sure.

The connections are connected properly, checked many times.

I am also experiencing this problem. Keyboard and trackpad are not working but the power on button does. USB keyboard and mouse work fine. Also battery is not charging at all, as soon as magsafe is unplugged system shuts down. I've just replaced the keyboard - it made no difference. Coconut battery shows 100% charge, 348 load cycles. model is Macbook A1181 core 2duo. please help - I've spent days trying to figure it out...

I had the same problem with the keyboard and trackpad not working. The power button would work. However there were instances where the keyboard would work and the track pad wouldn't. recently water was spilled on the machine and it would turn on and off randomly. After cleaning it out with toothbrush and alcohol it worked fine except the trackpad. It was on recently and I tried turning it off using the power button when I realized it wouldn't work. I took out the battery in order to turn it off. Unable to turn it on ever since. I recently ordered a new top case with keyboard and trackpad. I know the answer to a great many problems on my mac but this problem beats me.

Waterdamage is the most common

check ribbon cables and connectors to motherboard

try replacing electronics under trackpad

finally blame motherboard

resoilder southbridge
