My l shaped magsafe wasnt lighting up or powering on macbook. It worked fine a few weeks ago. Had it in a drawer. I opened the back case up and connected the magsafe without the back case on. It lit up immediately. I placed the back case back on and nothing. Repeated the steps and took cover back off and connected it…nothing. Whats going on with this macbook?

Is the system able to boot up without the MagSafe adapter?
In addition what is the condition of the cord and the connectors. Review this Apple T/N: Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters. Make sure the pins and pads of the connectors are clean.

The battery died because it has been on a shelf for a few weeks. I plugged it up and noticed that no light was coming on the adapter. opened back case attached cable and light came on. Replaced back case and light was off again.
Check the MagSafe to make sure its in good working order and is the correct one. If the connections are likewise clean you'll likely need to get a new MagSafe and you may need a new battery as well.
Ive orderd a new magsafe from amazon as the one i had was the original that came with the macbook. I replaced the battery a few moths ago.
Be careful here! Many bad units being sold (fakes!) Counterfeit Macbook charger teardown: convincing outside but dangerous inside Apple was being aggressive combatting these but with them moving on to USB-C less effort is being made to make sure the fakes are not shipped! I would pay the price for a real Apple unit from an Apple Store or online at Apple.

Hard to answer without testing..it might be the magsafe, the I/O board/cable, logic board. Try checking the magsafe pins on the connector one by one..they have springs and should move when pressure is applied..if they don’t use a contact cleaning spray to remove possible dirt or oxide. As alternative, trying a known working magsafe would be a must here, before anything else.
