Why does my dvd player only read hello and won't do anything else

Many DVD players go through a “startup sequence”. Part of that sequence is to display HELLO as you see in your case. This is an indication to the user, that the player is starting. In this case, the startup sequence is not completing. There can be many reasons for this and without more information, anything stated here would be pure speculation.

The problem can be power related, an issue with the DVD drive itself, or even a problem with the main controller(CPU). You can try unplugging the unit for a while to see if that resets it, but without further investigation, there is little we can provide.
