Is my lawnmower about to blow up?

First stage - lawmower started cutting out for no reason - I looked at solutions, cleaned the carburettor (with carb cleaner) and it ran slowly and unevenly eventually cutting out.

Second stage - I gave the carb a second more thorough clean with carb cleaner and WD40.

This time the engine started faster and louder than I can ever remember it being (I’ve had it some years so it might have been gently reducing speed in that time). After 3 minutes there was smoke coming from it and I lost my courage and stopped using it. Admittedly there is a chance the smoke was just old oil and petrol on the outside of the mower during the clean but before I use it again I’d like to know if I might have done anything to cause the mower to run too hot.

The Lawnmower is a Mccullough Vantage 55; the engine a Tecsumeh

Thoughts most welcome.

Thanks Robert. My mower (McCullough) has no choke, eventually I found the problem to be that I’d maladjusted the connector to the “Governor” which was causing it to run too fast all the time. Once adjusted the mower was usable again.

I went through a mower engine a while back and when I started it it smoked like mad. It seemed like it was running on full choke. I checked the air filter and it looked ok, but there was a screen before the filter that was plugged solid with grass.
