iec c14 plug - Needs replacing

Hi all

I need to replace the “iec c14 plug“ of my peavey speakers:

I have bought a new iec c14 plug but since I have not replaced this before so I was wondering if you give me some advice.

  1. How do I detach it. Will is pop open if I pull?
  2. How so I install the new one. Solder and tape?

If there are any instructional videos that would be great.

Many thanks

You’re replacing the IEC C14 appliance inlet (the male chassis connector on the speaker). Good news: it does NOT pop open from the outside, and you should not just pull it out.

Since this is a mains voltage (230V) part, safety is critical.

⚠️ Before You Start

  • 🔌 Unplug the speaker from the wall
  • ⏳ Let it sit for 10–15 minutes (internal capacitors can hold charge)
  • If you’re unsure at any point → better let a technician do it

How to Remove the IEC C14 Inlet

These connectors are usually mounted in one of two ways:

1️⃣ Snap-in type (most common in speakers)

  • Held in place by plastic retaining clips
  • Removed from inside the cabinet, not from outside

2️⃣ Screw-mounted type

  • Held by visible screws (yours does not appear to be this type)

From your photo, it looks like a snap-in panel mount IEC C14.

✅ Correct removal method:

  1. Remove the rear amplifier plate from the speaker (usually several screws around the edge).
  2. Carefully pull the plate out.
  3. From the inside, locate the IEC connector.
  4. You will see two plastic retaining tabs (one on each side).
  5. Use a flat screwdriver to press the tabs inward while pushing the connector out.

👉 Do NOT try to pry it out from the outside — you’ll damage the housing.

How It Is Wired

Inside you’ll see three terminals:

L  = Live (brown wire)
N  = Neutral (blue wire)
⏚ = Earth (green/yellow wire)

Often marked:

  • L
  • N
  • ⏚ (earth symbol)

Take a clear photo before disconnecting anything.

How to Install the New One

🔧 Connection Type

Most IEC C14 inlets use:

  • 6.3mm spade (Faston) connectors
  • NOT solder directly

👉 You should NOT:

  • Twist wires together
  • Use tape
  • Leave exposed solder joints

✅ Proper method:

  • Use crimped insulated spade connectors
  • Or reuse the existing ones if they are in good condition

If your new inlet has solder tabs:

  • Solder properly
  • Use heat-shrink tubing
  • No electrical tape as primary insulation

Important Safety Checks

Before reassembly:

  • Make sure earth is firmly connected
  • No loose strands
  • No wires touching metal parts
  • Connector fully clicks into place

Very Important ⚠️

If this speaker is a Peavey active (powered) speaker, it contains:

  • Mains voltage
  • Large capacitors
  • Potential shock hazard

If you’re not comfortable working with 230V wiring, this is a quick job for a repair shop.
