Screen replacement home button wobble

I am having an issue with the home button wobbling/sliding/sticking after replacing the screen on an iPhone 6s. I read the question ‘iPhone 6S home button "sticking" after screen replacement’, and it similar, but also different. If I tighten the screws on the plate that holds the home button in place, it makes it such that the button won’t depress. So, I loosened the screws and bent it a little and the button will depress, but it wobbles/slides around a bit. Now, if I put the screen back together all the way and tighten the screws that are by the lightning port, then the button becomes too tight again and won’t depress. Is it possible that the opening for the home button in the screen is too small (just a tiny bit)? If so, should I/can I enlarge the hole?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Arthur,

What gasket? There is a thin 'used-to-be-sticky' film around the home button, almost in a square shape. But as far as what I think of when I see the word 'gasket', there isn't a raised rubber ring or anything. Unless it fell off somewhere.

That is the home button gasket. It sounds like it's still there. It provides ingress protection and also adheres the button assembly to the display assembly:

Hmmm.. I think you're right that it is still there, but it does not adhere to the screen back anymore. Maybe I should just get a new one. That should fix the wobble if it can adhere to the back of the screen. Thanks Arthur!

Hi,

Well I wish I could say that it was the gasket, but it wasn’t. Turns out that the replacement screen’s opening for the home button actually was a bit too small. So, using a little bit of sand paper, I was able to just barely enlarge the opening and smooth it out (I guess) enough so that the home button fit properly. I appreciate everyone’s help on this.

Hi Rob,

Is the gasket that is adhered to the home button loose?

The gasket provides ingress protection and also adheres the button assembly to the display assembly:
