Bad sparkplug wires may be causing this.
If a cylinder loses it's spark for a few revolutions here and there fuel can build up and cause the backfiring.

Side note I got it to idle by itself and messed with wire and hose ect it started to smooth out then boom backfired and the while engine compartment was ablaze hahahah
