Why will my mbp not boot?
This past weekend my mbp became sluggish to the point that I thought some type of malware had infected it. It would crash restart when I would launch Firefox. Luckily I had my data backed up. I ran the hardware diagnostics and everything came back fine. No issues. I reloaded the OS (without wiping the drive) but I still had the same problem. One thing that I did notice is that I would have to restart my mbp multiple times to get it to boot, it would not play the startup sound. I took out the battery and from that point on it rebooted every-time I turned it on.
I wiped my disk using disk utility and and again reloaded the OS. (clean install this time). I got everything set up and reinstalled a new version of Firefox and Avast. A few minutes later Apple told me that I had updates ready to be installed. Thinking that I wanted my mbp to be be totally protected I let it install the updates. During the update it got hung and never recovered. After a few hours I restarted my mbp and now all I get is the light at the front turning on. No sounds, no attempt to boot. I put a new HD in it thinking it could be a bad boot sector but I realize that it is not even getting to that point.
My question is, is this a software, or hardware problem? Was it the update that killed it? I had not had any issues prior to this time with my mbp. Is there anything that I can do to fix it? I have googled and read many articles, but I have not found one that matches my scenario. Any help is appreciated.

What new hard drive did you use? What system are you trying to install. I suspect a formatting problem if you are trying High Sierra or Mojave,

I am trying to reload High Serria, the same OS that I have been running since it came out and I believe the last one that I can run on that hardware. I don't think it is the HD, as it is not even getting to the point that it see's the HD. When I hit the power button, the light comes on in front, but it does not attempt to do anything to mount a disk, load an OS.

I just tried it again and I got it to attempt to boot. It is now going to internet recovery mode. It is hit or mis, so I am ruling out a hardware problem. I am at a loss.

Just reran the Apple Hardware test. 2:29:16 later it reported:
No trouble found.
So it has to be a software issue. One would think that if the hard drive was removed the system would still attempt to boot, and then report that no hard drive was found. Is that not a true statement? The problem that I am having is that the system is randomly failing to doing anything other than turn on the front light. At a loss here.
