I have a strange clicking issue with my 2019 mbp trackpad

Hello,i got my 2019 MacBook Pro 15” today and I realized sometimes the right side of the trackpad doesn’t want to click, same also happens for the left side but not as much.After a search I see some other 2018 mbp users having the same issue.Is this mean we got a defective units or its because of the design? I am adding a video

Your touchpad is not mechanical! Unlike the older trackpad, it also is very large!

Apple doesn’t state it but through experimentation its clear the outer edges and corners can evoke palm rejection if the surface is dirty!

Using a micro cloth very slightly dampened with 85% Isopropyl alcohol and wiping the surface of the uppercase and the touchpad to remove any skin oils.

Even still you may find the sensitivity is still a bit high. So far Apple has not offered a solution. All I can say is get accustomed to using the inner third of the touchpad for the click action

thanks for the information btw I am using my macbook for only 4-5 hours so I think the surface should still be clean..Also when I try to power on the machine from the same spot, sometimes it does open on the first try but sometimes need to be clicked 4-5times.I can send it back but I am worried if its a design flaw and new one will also have the same issue

If you just bought it, return it and get another system. Before you leave the Apple Store make sure the touchpad is working properly.

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the bigger surface. If they stuck with the older design I would have been happy!

I am having the same issue. Same 2019 15” MBP. I discovered it after I set my mouse right click to be the bottom right corner. I noticed a few times that the pad did not push down. … and same as you, it is mainly on the right side. Did you exchange your MBP? I am going to the Apple store to test out the display models to see if this is due to design or if my track pad is defective.

The bottom corners appear to be more sensitive on rejection as the system assumes its your palm not your finger.

Just went to Best Buy today. The display model does the same thing. I talked to the rep there and he seemed surprised. My only guess (and I think Dan was sort of eluding to this) is that because the track pad is so big, they may have intentionally made these spots hard to click. As I am typing, my palms are actually touching the pad. Also, I looked at the 13 inch track pad. It is smaller than the 15 inch. It also has no non clickable spots. On the 13 inch, the track pad goes to the edge of the left command key for both 13 and 15. however, the 13 only goes to the leading edge of the option key on the right. It goes to the ending edge to the right on the 15 inch. It seems to me that the left hand side being more similar to the 13 inch would explain why the left side is not affected as much, but the right hand side being pushed further out to the right on the 15 inch could be the reason why the right side has affected zones.

In all honesty, given the size of the track pad, it would be pretty annoying for it to be clicking whenever my palm it touching it. Anyway, all of this is speculation. I'll update if I get anymore from apple.

I have a friend who finds the size bothersome so he created a card stock cover so the size of the exposed trackpad was what he liked using. Once and awhile he needs to lift it to get the pointer back otherwise it works for him ;-}

Hi. Not sure if you still need an answer to this but I just sort of figured it out earlier. I had a Macbook Air 2017 prior to getting my Macbook Pro 2019 and on the former, the trackpad was so easy to use. Now, on my Pro 2019, simply clicking and right-clicking something has become such a burden. I played around with the trackpad settings on the System Preference and it turns out that you just have to turn off the Force Click function. Hope that works out and resolves it for you somehow.
