Starts once, then have to move RAM to opposite slot for next boot

Very weird problem. Once laptop has been shutdown, it won't boot until I move the RAM to the other slot. Then boots once more and I then have to move RAM back the next time it is powered off.

Restarts or ok, it only occurs when machine is powered off.

Tried bios update to latest version on Acer site. Tried different memory, tried removing battery, and cmos battery. Just keeps on doing it.

If powered by plug, the power light comes on for 2 to 3 seconds, then you here it power off ( disk clicks). It then tries powering up itself constantly repeating the turn off cycle.

On battery power only, it tries only once.

Laptop is also very sluggish in Windows 10, tried changing 4gb to 8gb module and it starting doing the problem described above. Putting original RAM back in dies not solve the problem.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi @gabell ,

it looks like RAM SLOT issue, and it’s hard to repair.

What you can do?

  • Disassembly your laptop to the motherboard, unplug batteries, RAMs, HDDs and reheat your RAM SLOTs for some time (av. 380-400°C for 1-2 min.) - Do not heat the metal. Only soldered parts of slots. Please be careful, it may destroy your laptop if you overheat it.
  • Check the connections - search for test points on your MB and check, if all pins are connected (continuity test - av. 0,0 - 1,0 ohm.)
  • Check dust - if the slots are dirty, it may be an issue.
  • Insert another LOW ram to the slot. You may use some 1GB - 512MB RAM or order one more POW RAM and increase your power.
  • Check differences of DIMM/RAM - Try to use DIMM instead of RAM

If it’s still not working, it may be also chipset issue or really HW issue, which will mean a new MB.

Hope, something will work…
