Installing Mac OSX on a new hard drive from external hard drive

Hi!

First of all, thanks in advance for the help!

I'm in some problems here, i own a Macbook Pro 2,16 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, which came with 120 gb HD from stock and i'm replacing it right now with a new 500 gb HD by myself with your guide.

The thing is that the DVD drive is having problems to read the leopard DVD i've got and i'm looking for a way to install the system from an external Hard Drive, how can i do this?

Thank you very much!

Get an external SATA hard drive enclosure or OWC's Newer Technology USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter, and put your old drive in it. USB is fine but firewire would be better as you can boot from it. Hook up the new drive to the adapter or enclosure, format the drive using Disk Utilities, give it one partition or more. use SuperDuper to clone the old drive to the new one. Install the new drive.

After reading your comment, i decided to make a clone copy of my hard drive with Super Duper! It seems to be working very nice and it's going to be a lot easier than installing all software again! I will post the results after i replace the hard drive and see if it worked perfectly.

Thank you very much for your help!

If you got an external DVD drive, connect that to your Mac and start holding down the alt key. Then select the ext. drive and install from there. After finishing the installation, you can hook up your old HD with an adapter or USB case, both you can find inexpensive at well stocked stores, and chose "Transfer my data from another volume on this Mac" in the welcome dialog. Alternatively you can finish off the welcome stuff, create a user account and transfer your programs and data with the Migration Assistan, found in Utilities.

Thank you very much!! I was wondering if the boot command would work without any data on it, i will be installing Snow Leopard from a USB drive and will follow your suggestions on transfering my data from the older HD using an USB case.
