Replacing a single butterfly mechanism for 2ND GEN butterfly keyboard.

Pretty much what the question says, the key itself works, but the key (in my case, it’s the “W”) is now dislodged, and can’t attach itself again. On further inspection, I realized that 1st, the “W” key itself had 2 broken hooks (bottom left and bottom right) out of the 4 on each corner (a replacement key is easy to find) and, the bottom left cap of the butterfly mechanism is broken too, so I’m looking for a guide that would ideally help me replace both, the butterfly mechanism, and the key itself.

They have a guide iBook, PowerBook & MacBook Keycap removal & fitting The trick is getting the lower pins on first as you slide the cap down to capture the pins and then the top ones snap in.

Hey, so I thought of this first, and while my Mac is technically covered by that, they won't do it for free since then Mac must be exhibiting the following behaviors:

-Letters or characters repeat unexpectedly

-Letters or characters do not appear

-Key(s) feel "sticky" or do not respond in a consistent manner

which, don't get me wrong, as we speak my "number 4", "number 9" and "b" keys have those 3 problems, but since my W is busted, they won't repair it...

Tell them you don't want the W key fixed. Fix what they screwed up! Go up the ladder and get to a manager. Mention lawyers. Class action law suits!

@mayer - I'm not disagreeing with you Apple messed up! Apple is cracking down on broken keys as they feel the key was forcefully broken Vs product failure. But of course the reason the key was taken off was the defective design! A good case of Catch22 Damed either way!

I've aimed a few folks to the local Apple Store when they gave the same response. So now I try to fix the key so its not loose before I send them to Apple. That way they don't have a reason to not fix (or I should say replace) the keyboard.

I also think the Genius's attitude also comes to play. Getting one on a bad day likely gets you buckis! Some are better and sympathize.
