Dock connector is unresponsive to charging and syncing

Device: iPad 1st generation, 64GB, WiFi only

My iPad is about 8 months old. Today, I plugged it in to charge as I normally would, and nothing happened. I attempted several different cables, and also tried the wall charger, and three different computers, all of which have been able to previously charge the iPad.

Deciding to rule out all possibilities, I decided to perform an on-device reset. I have a jailbroken device on iOS 4.3.3. With the device connected to a charging source, I hit Erase All Content. Suddenly, the charge sound played. The device then immediately went to the Apple logo, and stayed there for hours. The content was never erased, as I did a force reboot and everything came back up. I'm guessing somehow the jailbreak interfered with the process. Still however, no charge or sync.

I did try a DFU mode restore, but the iPad never showed up over USB when following the instructions to enter DFU mode. Tried again with several cables and computers.

All I've done with my jailbreak is enable SSH access (With a secure password) and install a bunch of command line utilities, as well as SBSettings. (I uninstalled SBSettings just to make sure, but it didn't resolve anything.) I've also done a little bit of theming (replacing sounds/graphics) but nothing deeper than that.

Nothing has happened physically to the device that would have caused damage to the connector. I always handle it carefully and am gentle with the dock connector, and I don't use any stands or other accessories that might put stress on it.

Is it safe to assume this actually is a hardware problem requiring possibly replacing the dock connector? In other words, is it safe to say that software CANNOT cause the dock connector to stop responding? Most importantly, can I assume software would be UNABLE to make DFU mode not work?

I'm not too keen on bringing it into the Genius Bar, 1) because of the jailbreak and 2) because I didn't buy any additional AppleCare so I'm sure even if they would fix it they'd make me pay dearly for the privilege.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

More details:

I did some verbose logging on device and saw something VERY peculiar.

Here's what the log shows when I *connect* a USB cable which is connected to my Mac:

And now, when I *disconnect* the cable:

``

Notice: It seems to be detecting the cable. However, the device is "Entering" device mode when the cable is *disconnected* and "Leaving" device mode when it is *connected*.

I'm now not 100% convinced this is hardware...

Advice?

Hi Flint,

I know it's been a while, but did you ever get this issue resolve? I have the exact same problem!

Thanks
