neverending kernel panic, wont boot from HD or CD..

hello my favorite macintosh-ites. i have a computer that has a kernal panic doing EVERYTHING. it wont get past the apple when i try to boot from hard drive, cd, another disk or anyhting. i have tried multiple hard drives and sticks of rams with no result, just kernel panics. i replaced the heatsink and fan too. this computer worked just last week, i havent used it since, then today i was giving it to a friend and BAM, no good! any ideas what would cause this kernel panic? if i leave no hard drive in it or anything, the computer will come to a flashing folder as expected, but will kernel panic when you try to do anything else including run an AHT...

if it makes a difference, last week i downloaded the firmware that prevents the computer from sleeping, computer worked fine after that then stopped. thanks in advance everyone.

it worked for an entire day, i let it run on battery, restarted it twice, worked fine. screwed the keyboard in and nothing! so confused why it works sometimes perfectly but kernel panics the rest of the time?!

Steve why beat your head against the wall, go look at the system log files. Let the operating system tell you why it is not happy. Run the hardware test off the install disk, see what codes it comes up with. In all honesty as I hear your last comment. I would venture to say that the logic board has experienced liquid damage and not cleaned properly. That is one of the largest creators of "ghosts" on an electronic item. You might consider giving the board a nice bath in alcohol and scrubbing it with a brush.

I am really concerned about that firmware you installed. I don't mess with firmware unless absolutely necessary because its far to easy to brick a logic board and this seems like a firmware problem to me based on what you have tried. If there is any way to undo that install I would--you probably will need to download the proper firmware from Apple to reinstall. How you will get it to run I don't know. You could ask a "genius" to do it for you but they probably will just want to replace the logic board.

it was an apple update that prevented the computer from restarting once it was in sleep mode. installed fine and computer worked fine for awhile after that.

+ If it's a firmware issue, I don't think there is any way to remote install that. That's a tough one.
