ingrid, it sounds like two separate problems since the circuit of the tail light and the rear break light are independent of each other. I do have the diagram attached and without physically checking out your vehicle, I would suggest to check the headlight switch. A faulty headlight switch could continue to close the circuit to the lights and thus cause the lights to stay on. Your brake lights are activated by a switch along your brake pedal. It is a plunger style that close the circuit when you press on the pedal. Check to see if it is a. still touching the pedal, b. that the plunger moves freely c. the wiring is still attached. You can also check with a multimeter or a test light to see if it still opens the contacts when the brake is not pressed and close when it is. Of course there is always a chance that your wiring harness is shortening out somewhere, most commonly on a connector or junction. Start with the easy things first...Hope this helps a bit, good luck.

I have recently discovered this issue as well, i solved my problem however. If you get under your dash, and push your brake pedal down, follow the brake pedal arm up, there should be a button that is pressed when you release the brake pedal. Which is what controls your brake lights. Put some tape around that medal on the brake pedal arm so it presses the button when u release it, and your lights should stay off. :)

Hi @ Jason Tong,

Have you checked that the brake light fuse is OK?

Have you checked that the brake light switch which is operated by the brake pedal is OK and not loose from its’ mounting or that its’ rubber actuator pad is not missing? Look at the brake pedal up under the dashboard to see the switch.

According to the image below it is fuse #42 in the engine bay fuse box.

Check if you have power at the brake lights when you operate the brake pedal. If you do and the lamps do not glow you may have an earth connection problem as all the brake lamps go to the same earth connection point.

Here’s an image of the brake wiring diagram for a 1992 Honda Civic DX which should help you to find the problem.

Hi,

The service manual doesn’t show the location of the earth connection, so I suggest if a “missing” earth is the problem check that there is continuity between the earth wires (black) on all the brake lights and then run a suitably sized wire from a clean bare metal point on the chassis at a convenient location to one of the brake light’s “black” wires and then make sure that you have an earth at all the brake lights.

Here’s an image of what the manual says about the wiring but it only refers to the connectors for the earth etc but not their location.

it is simple fix just look were the break pedal press the break switch you will see that a small grummet is missing allowing the pin in the switch to go tru so you need to cover that hole or just go buy a plastic pin and place it on the empty hole that will solve you break ligths from staying on
