Should I replaced the Left I/O Board for power issue?

I have a MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Model A1211 that was dropped. It runs just fine off of a charged battery, but it does not power on without a charged battery installed (does not work off charger alone) and it does not charge the battery when it is plugged in.

Would the root of this problem lie in issues with the Left I/O board? Can you recommend any testing to isolate the source of the problem?

Thanks!

Was the charger connected when it fell? What color do you get on the magnetic power in tip? How are you charging the battery now?

The port appears fine. The USB and audio out on that side work. Usually removing the battery is okay if the power supply is plugged in. I tried a different charger, but had the same results.

I don't know if the power cord was plugged in when it fell.

The MagSafe connector still attaches and goes to green. If the laptop is powered on and slept with the battery and power cord in and I remove the battery, the laptop shuts off.

The batteries are charging with an external charger.

You can always try the Apple Hardware Test, but yes, it seems the left i/o board would be the way to go.

Can you see any external damage to the I/O port? Does the USB port next to it work? Speaker & headphone ports? I tried removing the battery from mine and it stayed on. Do you have a way to test charger on a friends machine. If the USB port is dead then I would definitely do as rab said and replace the board. But first I would open it and see if I could spot anything askew.

Since the usb & audio ports are working, that doesn't help us. It's to late tonight for me to open mine but I'll do it tomorrow and see if I can spot anything that might be easily broken. Will let you know by 7:00 PM CST, if not earlier.

Just wanted to report back - I replaced the Left I/O Board and it solved the issue. The old board does not appear damaged, and the cables did not appear loose inside, but I'm going to chalk it up as a win.

Thanks for the comments!
